Things are shaping up for one of the newer members of the Edmonton Oilers to stick around with the team.
According to NHL insider Frank Seravalli, the team is working on an extension with defenceman Jake Walman, with the team hoping to ink the 29-year-old for a longer period of time.
“I believe they’ve been centered on a long-term deal between Walman and the Oilers,” Seravalli said. “We’ll see what that number comes in at when it does get done…something to keep an eye on as the Oilers and Wallman continue their discussions.”
The news of Walman potentially getting an extension with the Oilers isn’t anything new, but a longer-term deal brings up a lot of talk in the direction this team is going. The Toronto native is heading into the final season of a three-year contract, which he signed as a member of the Detroit Red Wings in February 2023. The deal carries a cap hit of $3.4 million, with a modified no-trade clause where Walman submits a 10-team no-trade list.
Walman came to the Oilers at the trade deadline, as part of a deal with the San Jose Sharks. He finished off what was a career season in Edmonton, scoring eight points in 15 games for the Oilers, finishing the 2024-25 campaign with a career-high 33 assists and 40 points in 65 games. He ended up adding two goals and eight assists for 10 points in 22 postseason games.
There’s no question that Walman being brought into the fold made an impact on the team as they went to a second consecutive appearance in the Stanley Cup Final, despite the Oilers falling to the Florida Panthers for the second year in a row.
Getting Walman on the books for an extended period of time would give the team some security on the back end for the foreseeable future. Of the rearguards listed on the active roster, only Evan Bouchard, Darnell Nurse, and Ty Emberson are signed beyond the coming season, and Emberson is only on board through the 2026-27 season.
Originally selected by the St. Louis Blues in the third round of the 2014 draft, Walman has appeared in 267 regular-season games in his NHL career, scoring 32 goals and 59 assists for 91 points.
