Welcome back to another edition of Throwback Thursday!
This week in 2011 (Nov. 30), Edmonton Oilers rookie center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins tied a club rookie scoring record notching his 16th point in November. It tied the record with two legendary Oilers for most points in a month by a rookie.
It came in thanks to a one goal, one assist night in a 3-2 shootout loss against the Minnesota Wild. Overall, however, Nugent-Hopkins finished that month with six goals and 10 assists and those 16 points were a tie with Jari Kurri and Glenn Anderson.
Five years later, Connor McDavid entered the picture and broke the record with 17 points in Feb. 2016.
That rookie season, for those who don’t recall, was nothing short of incredible as he scored 18 goals and 52 points in 62 games. It earned him a spot on the all-rookie team but in the Calder race, he fell to Gabriel Landeskog due to games played, despite scoring as many points as his counterpart.
Maybe one day an Oiler will win the Calder again…
