Welcome to Oilersnation’s top five fights of the year, where we take a look at the highest-rated Edmonton Oilers fights of the year, courtesy of our friends at Hockey Fights.
The Oilers’ fifth-highest-rated fight of the year came this season, when Corey Perry fought Detroit Red Wings forward Joe Veleno on Oct. 27th, 2024.
The scrap happened late in the first period between the two when they dropped the mitts near centre ice.
Veleno would throw the first punches, sending a few clubbing rights towards Perry, without landing any. Perry would respond with a left before pulling Veleno’s helmet off, firing off half a dozen uppercuts, and then coming up with a big right hand that landed. Veleno would push Perry to the boards with a few left jabs, before the Oilers vet would land another.
Veleno was clearly not wanting much more, trying to keep his distance. But just before the referees jumped in to break things up, Veleno would get a few body shots in.
The fight came as a retaliation for a hit Veleno landed on Derek Ryan earlier in the period, where he was caught in an awkward spot near the boards. Edmonton would go on to win the game 3-2 in overtime. The tilt marked Perry’s second of the year, having fought Philadelphia Flyers winger Joel Farabee a dozen days earlier.
Hockey Fights viewers gave the fight an average rating of 6.55 out of 10, with 66 percent of voters selecting Perry as the winner, 27 percent saying Veleno, while seven percent called it a draw.
