The Edmonton Oilers kept on adding this week, signing Jack Roslovic amid Wednesday’s season-opening loss to the Calgary Flames.
The deal hasn’t been registered with the league yet, but is expected to be done today, and all it will take is one transaction to get him on the active roster. Roslovic is expected to join the team for a Friday practice ahead of Saturday’s game against the Vancouver Canucks, leaving the door open to him making his debut that night.
Getting Roslovic on the team could be as simple as placing Jake Walman on the injured reserve. It would keep him out for seven days and allow the Oilers to punt a different decision down the road.
The next easiest option would be to send one of Matt Savoie, Ike Howard or David Tomasek to the AHL as the trio are the only players on the active roster that aren’t eligible for waivers. But I don’t see that happening. The team has Savoie in the top-six mix already, and the other two both had solid games, with the latter getting his first NHL point on a great feed to Leon Draisaitl.
Either way, the Oilers are going to have some tough roster decisions in the coming month. Accounting for all of Mattias Janmark, Walman and Zach Hyman getting healthy, as well as the addition of Roslovic, the team will need clear three players off the active roster — two forwards and a defenceman.
One easy box to tick on this front would be waiving Curtis Lazar. Signed as a free agent in July, he’s currently in the press box and has the least likely path to minutes. A decision will have to be made about a defenceman, as the team will need to clear one of Alec Regula, Troy Stecher and Ty Emberson, the Oilers’ six through eight defencemen.
That still leaves the team with one roster move to make. Risking Noah Philp on waivers is a dangerous proposition, and not a move this scribe is a fan of. He lined up with Vasily Podkolzin and Kasperi Kapanen against the Flames, and that line was excellent, controlling 72.2 percent of the shot attempt share, outshooting Calgary 7-3, while controlling 55 percent of the expected goal share.
Moving on from Mattias Janmark could be the option for the team. While he’s been a solid soldier for the team, the acquisitions the Oilers have made in the last six months have significantly increased the competition and one has to wonder if he’s spot on the roster has become redundant.
Ultimately, that’s not a choice the team has to make just yet. Hyman is still three weeks to a month away from returning to action, but make no mistake: the team will have some tough roster decisions coming soon.
