The Edmonton Oilers had an interesting first day of the 2022 NHL Draft on Thursday.
They traded down from No. 29 overall to No. 32 overall while also ponying up a second- and third-round draft pick in order to dump Zack Kassian’s contract on the Arizona Coyotes and they then selected winger Reid Schaefer.
We took a look at the Kassian trade and why it was better for Ken Holland to pony up some draft picks to move his contract than it would have been to use another buyout. We then looked at the Schaefer selection and how he fits into the team’s plans over the next few years.
