It’s been a long week for Raphael Lavoie, caught in hockey’s no-man’s land having been waived by the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday, claimed by the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday, waived by them on Tuesday, and reclaimed by Oilers on Wednesday.
And now Lavoie has landed on waivers once again, with the Oilers placing the winger there Thursday. The Oilers have no desire to lose the player, as Oilers GM Stan Bowman highlighted earlier this week, but that just might be what happens.
When Vegas claimed him earlier in the week, they had also put in a claim on Cole Schwindt, landing both players via the wire. They, however, had hoped to claim just one of them, with Lavoie being the odd man out of the pair.
While the Oilers did nab him Wednesday, the team wasn’t able to outright send him to the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors, as they weren’t the only team to put in a claim for the 24-year-old. If the Golden Knights put in another claim for him, according to PuckPedia, they’d be able to outright assign him to their AHL affiliate.
There’s clearly a market for Lavoie among teams, with multiple having now claimed, or attempting to claim him, and it’s safe to say that come Friday, there’ll likely be another twist and turn in this story. I have a hard time seeing the Oilers be able to get him through the wire and to Condors, where they could use his offensive punch.
After all, he’s scored 53 goals and 95 points in 127 games over the last two seasons. Lavoie had a strong showing in training camp this year with the Oilers, scoring twice in three games, as the team controlled the pace of play with him on the ice at five-on-five, possessing 54.2 percent of the expected goal share and 51.9 percent of the scoring chance share, while outscoring the opposition 4-2. Shot attempts were split between the Oilers and their opposition.
