Young Stars GDB 2.0: Oilers vs Jets

After taking care of Calgary’s prospects with a 4-2 victory last night, the Oilers will look to do the same against the hopefuls from Winnipeg.
Despite Calgary icing a more experienced lineup in yesterday’s tournament opener, the Oilers were able to weather any storms they faced while maintaining their pace, eventually imposing their will on the Flames in the third period. Looking at tonight’s matchup against the Young Jets, I’m expecting another high flying game that’s (maybe) short on structure and polish but high in excitement as a product of some of the sloppiness.
Even though yesterday’s game didn’t feature any scraps or usual shenanigans that we generally get in these rookie tournaments, there was plenty of skill on display. Chances are that tonight will be the same. If the Oilers can repeat that same type of performance, and limit their mistakes in the neutral zone, then there is no reason that the Jets’ prospects won’t end up as #2 on the Young Stars kill list. That said, the Oilers could be a little bit lighter on skill after Gerry Fleming changed up the lineup to get more players on the ice. Either way, I’m expecting another entertaining affair as these prospects look to impress their future employers.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING…

With the first game of the Young Stars tournament out of the way, it’s time to look towards the second game, which is against Edmonton. The first game did have some growing pains, but we can expect to see some progress in game two.
After game one, it’s become apparent which players we need to keep an eye on.
In goal, Berdin was great making 35 saves on 38 shots. If he starts again, watch for him to settle into the NHL rules a bit more and get comfortable. He did have a penalty for a trapezoid violation but as the game went on, he was solid. Often he bailed out the defence when there were issues.
