SCOUT’S HONOR

chiarelli capture

The Edmonton Oilers have had a busy summer. Peter Chiarelli’s appointment as the team’s GM signaled change and we saw plenty in the weeks after he was hired. We should expect more and there are signs the scouting staff shuffle continues.

LAST TIME WE TALKED

On July 10, we had a look at the changes made by the new admin in the amateur scouting area:

  • Bob Green: Director of Player Personnel
  • Stu MacGregor: Head Amateur Scout
  • Bill Dandy: QMJHL
  • Brad Davis: OHL, tier 2 leagues in Q and O
  • Kent Hawley: OHL, QMJHL, tier 2 leagues in Q and O
  • Bob Brown: WHL (and BCJHL based on media comments)
  • Jim Crosson: WHL
  • Scott Harlow: NCAA and American junior leagues (east coast)
  • Frank Musil: Europe
  • Pelle Eklund: Europe
  • Robert Nordmark: Europe
  • Joseph Cucci: Year three, don’t know his area but it might be New England
  • Dave Heitz: Year three, goalie scout
  • Matti Virmanen: Oilers rely on him, gets mentioned a lot in media
  • Sylvain Rodrigue: Year two, goalies.

NOW…..

Oilers have updated a few names and things currently suss out like this:

AMATUER

  • Bob Brown: WHL (and BCJHL based on media comments)
  • Michael Chiarelli: (OHL seems likely)
  • Joseph Cucci: Year three, don’t know his area but it might be New England
  • Jim Crosson: WHL
  • Bill Dandy: QMJHL
  • Pelle Eklund: Europe
  • Scott Harlow: NCAA and American junior leagues (east coast)
  • Dave Heitz: Year three, goalie scout
  • James McGregor: (OHL. He was first mentioned as an Oilers scout spring 2012 but didn’t get listed until now. I know he scouted Yakupov for the Oilers. Appears to be a young up and comer).
  • Frank Musil: Europe
  • Alexander Naurov: (Russian, former Stars pick, retired 2014 as player)

Robert Nordmark left for the Leafs; Matti Virmanen is now on the pro side. I think he might be brilliant. Paul Messier is also listed on the pro side. Nothing on Rodrique I can find, will update as I can.

CHANGES!

We knew the OHL was going to be populated with scouts and it appears Michael Chiarelli is the choice. He certainly has experience. The Bruins website (this was before Mr. Chiarelli was let go this summer) stated
“Mike Chiarelli is in his seventh season with the Bruins organization. He is based out of Ottawa and scouts amateur prospects in Ontario.” Source

Seems to me that pro scouting has been a bigger itch to be scratched. All of the available amateur scouting services make a large amateur staff redundant. The oil desperately need new eyes on other teams pro prospects. What kind of changes have the oil made in the pro area?

  • Reg Dunlop

I apologize for asking a question unrelated to the article, however it’s still Oilers related. I’ve been away for the last little while so I haven’t been keeping up to date on the latest. A rumour I just heard is that the Oilers goalie coach returned to the minors and we are now without anyone. Is this true, and if so, are there any names coming up as far as candidates for the position? Thanks for the help and once again, apologies for going off course of the article

    Oilers Website:

    SCOTT HOWSON
    Sr. Vice President, Player Personnel

Hopefully this is just a liason to Chiarelli and that Green doesnt report directly to him, gut I think he does.

  • 24% body fat

    also missing is

    RICK CARRIERE
Sr. Director of Player Development who apparently green is below

    and

    KELLY BUCHBURGER
Manager Player Personell, must report to green

Life from the bottom of the NHL toilet bowl. Chiarelli’s sh*theads will be seeing the season from where they belong. The only thing they have to look forward to is a damn good flushing. It won’t take long for the Mc’Suck kid to want out of town if he’s smart!
I hate trolling but it seems when I look for intelligence in comments on other team sites from faithful fans all I find is oiler scum suckers there bashing other teams. This only shows the true nature of oiler fan base. You really are sad and nobody feels sorry for you slugs.
So I write this keeping in mind all the rest of the NHL fans and their house holds keep plungers on hand for the next oilers game!!!!

I don’t hate the flames either, in fact I’m ambivalent towards them. They are a non-factor. Irrelevant. Must be why their fans have such strong feelings about the oil, who have been spectacularly good or bad for most of their history; no middle ground, no average, no boring. I guess it bothers flamers that all of the media in Canada focuses on Oilers, as demonstrated by the # of national broadcasts we will enjoy this year. Whatever, have a happy McDavid flamethrower.

      • Just a Fan

I agree. Hating the flames is like hating your little brother. He is annoying. He is always trying to hang out with you and copies everything you do. The truth is that he idolizes you and secretly wishes he could be just like you. Recognize it for what it is –jealousy.

        How can you hate that?

  • HardBoiledOil 1.0

Flamethrower why don’t you crawl back to calgary where your idiot gm wasted all the money on overpriced defense while your team couldn’t score a goal. All that top end defense is useless without goals and we know which team scores the most this year

    • Poke Check

laughed pretty hard when I saw this comment.

      Edmonton goals in 2014-2015: 193
      Calgary goals in 2014-2015: 237

hmmm who couldn’t score a goal?

Guess McDavid is scoring at least 40 goals in his rookie year for you guys since you didn’t really add any other pieces up front. Might be a little but much to expect that from a teenager though.

and yes everyone does realize the kid has big potential and no we don’t actually care that much because your Team still stinks.

I hate to break it to you but down in Calgary we are very excited about our team and prospects coming up through the system. We are also pretty happy with the cap friendly deals we have signed our 3 core defensemen to.

Oh and the flames only allowed 213 goals last year while Edmonton allowed 276. so yeah booo defence and goalies.

      • Poke Check

Yeah this is shaping up to be like the 80’s edmontons goal build the best team calgarys goal build a team that can beat edmonton. Made for good hockey. With any luck it will work out better for you this time around

Am I right to think that the only changes on the pro scouting side are that they hired Paul Messier full-time, moved Virmanen from the amateur side, and fired Dave Semenko and Morey Gare then? I suppose this makes some sense, though I’m a bit surprised Chiarelli didn’t totally clean house and kept Cichocki and Sutter and add more support. I guess the myriad of directors, managers and senior vice presidents that the team has on staff like MacTavish, Howson, Bill Scott, and Bucky need something to do too.

Incidentally, Lowetide, Sylvain Rodrigue is listed as a “Goaltending Consultant” on the team’s “Coaches and Management” page:

    http://oilers.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=33068

Some of the profile pictures on that page are hilarious and worth a click through. Dustin Schwartz looks like he’s 15 years old. Herbers and McLellan both look like they’re about to murder somebody. Bucky looks like he just got a new toy for Christmas, and Bob Green looks like he has not seen daylight for weeks.

the thing is though that the immediate changes that needed to be made were removing Stu from the amateur side of the scouting and Gare and Semenko from the pro side of things, and they’ve done it. i have a feeling that the Oilers aren’t done yet.

      • HardBoiledOil 1.0

Yeah, I imagine Chiarelli isn’t done shaping his staff either. I don’t know how many of his guys Boston turfed after he left, aside from his brother, but I assume Chiarelli would hire more of them if they became available, as well as some other people he’s worked well with along the way. Presumably Chiarelli will be watching the holdovers closely and if they’re not producing results or don’t work well with him and his core group he’ll eventually let them go too. I assume they’re going to let MacTavish walk whenever his contract expires, and I don’t think anyone would be surprised if some of the other guys went with him.

Another potty mouth Flame fan ? Must be fun watching games with cow dung up to your noses , and having to dip down to find the plunger . Hope you keep your mouth closed at least . Obviously , you do not close your eyes as you get such a crappy view of things .
