The Nation Report Card by Print Machine (2.26.16)

Was there an Oiler that was the apple of your eye, this week? Maybe there was a player that you’d like to blast off into the sun? Now is the time to let your digital voice be heard and show the world how smart you are. As always, the report card is here for you and it’s time to let your voice be heard through the power of pollz.

Edmonton Hockey Player

There are always ways to improve the Report Card for next week and I’m always looking for new ideas that we can vote on. If you have something you can feel free to hit me up in the comments section or on Twitter. The report card is a moving target, and your suggestions are welcomed and encouraged. After all, it’s always more fun to judge various Oilers news than just the players and coaches.

We vote!

‘Booing players’? Principe was mewling about this in his pregame too. Given the way that this team has underperformed this year and the fact that management has done precious little to stop the slide, they’re lucky that they can hear anything other than the mice in Rexall’s kitchen and the hum of the scoreboard.

    • Sheldon "Oilers Fan for Life!!!"

The reality is at least we fill the seats. Many rinks would be so empty now. Really empty. If I am a player getting payed to play this game and some guy sitting in the nosebleeds makes less in a year than the lowest paid player in the NHL I have a responsibility to that fan to “Bring It!” no matter how you feel. no matter the score, no matter what!

    • Mike Krushelnyski

Remenda had some comment during the homestand about Rexall being notoriously quiet and fans not waking up until the team does something to get them cheering.

Gee, maybe because the team hasn’t played a meaningful game for 10 years? Just be happy fans are paying to go, and maybe they’ll chant “Let’s Go Oilers” when there’s a remote possibility the Oilers might actually go somewhere.

      • Jay (not J)

Contrast that with 2006 playoffs when Rexall was the loudest building the league had heard in years. Remenda will tell you that the Shark tank was louder, but the point is that this fan base cares like few others win lose or jultz.

Who give the thumbs down to booing players. What the actual hell. Team stinks like chicken diarrhea for a decade but we shouldn’t boo theses bums because it might hurt their fragile egos? I’m sure they will get by when the go home and count their millions after getting down with some lovely ladies from the Cactus Club.

      • Morgo_82

Exactly, I could understand the backlash if people started throwing things or yelling obscenities but booing? Who cares? As an athlete, grow a thicker skin and like you said, if you don’t want to be boo’d, then fix it.

Are these the same civil people that cheer when an opposing player gets levelled with a concussion inducing hit? The same civil people that lose their minds when they see Gadzic smash in a man’s face with his bare fists? The same people that boo and heckle the opposition because they are the artificial villains?

Sports is nothing but pure unadulterated entertainment. I cheer on the Oilers when they win and I boo them when they lose because it entertains me. The day it stops being entertaining is the day I stop doing it. The players in this league play because they like being paid to play a game. The day the negatives outweigh the benefits is the day they stop playing. We are all here by choice my friend and there is absolutely nothing civilized about grown men being invested in the fortunes of other grown men playing a game.

  • Sheldon "Oilers Fan for Life!!!"

I so hate this time of year. I woke up after not watching the game and did not even go to the Oilers page because I knew they had lost. I expected that after the embarrassment of the last game they would indeed play better but would loose in the end because they “have no finish” and the Kings do in spades. I was going to come on here and state that “I bet” that was what happened. Then I told myself “But what if this time it is different?” so I went to the flame and like a moth I now feel burned. Ten years of being burned in the spring. We now have set the record for most years consecutively out of the playoffs. Mature quickly young Connor, Mature quickly. I can not magically switch my passion for hockey to a new team. I grew up watching Gretzky, Messier etc how do you leave all that? I am not able to so here i am in perpetual Oilers Hell. The best moment for me this month that brought me courage was watching a little kid who has tons of “Finish” sign a one day contract. If only the team could learn from that kid to just not quit. We fans have not quit, I for one can not do so.

Booing is rude, disrespectful, classless, and creates yet another reason for free agents not to sign here. I get that some players are playing with lack of will and/or skill, but booing isn’t helping anyone.

    • Oil City Roller

That’s the spirit! Buy your tickets, buy the jersey’s for you and everyone you know. Make sure you buy lots of beer and hotdogs at the rink. Suck down every last drop of Kool-Aid they give you. But whatever you do, you will never, and I mean NEVER, question this team or its management . You should feel privileged that these gods amongst men would grace you with the pleasure of watching them play hockey.

    • Jay (not J)

Having a steaming bowl of ‘I don’t really give a damn’ served to you in your $200 seat while you’re washing down $25 garbage meals with $10 a cup beer to give these bums their millions brings out the rude, disrespectful and classless in anyone with a pulse.

  • 2Oilers4

Not booing doesn’t equal cheering. Noone is being forced to go to Oilers games, so there is no excuse to complain about the price of tickets, food and beer. Guess what, it’s the same at almost every arena. If you feel the price is t worth the product then why go? Paying for the ticket doesn’t give you the right be be a classless bozo. Booing is never acceptable, Oilers fans should be better than that. I’ll admit, I’m a 2nd tier fan, living in Ontario I can only see the Oilers at the closest teams to me, Jets and Wild, both a 6 hour drive away, however, I do take the time to watch the Oilers on TV, and that’s my prerogative, my choice. It sucks when I’m up until 1am to watch the Oilers lose, but I would never boo anyone.

  • camdog

I find it humorous that some think it’s wrong to boo a player at a hockey game, but have no problem booing them behind their back, behind a fake screen name on the inter web…

  • Morgo_82

I have zero problem with booing a player, if I’m paying a lot of money to watch a game I have a certain level of expectation that they should at least attempt to live up to. I’m not referring to them winning, I’m referring to them playing like they actually care, these guys are professionals that are getting paid a ridiculous amount of money to play a game, the least they could do is show up and act like they give a $hit. It’s not them losing that bothers me, it’s how they lose and I’ve been saying this for the last decade.

How about an option for “Played OK, nothing spectacular but no glaring errors either*”

*Looks at what was just written and shakes head…. These are the Oilers after all….

No glaring errors…..what am I smoking?
