JOSH WINQUIST: WHAT’S NEXT?

winquist williams 4

When Josh Winquist ended his WHL career (after posting 93 points in 67 games his final year) he went shopping for a pro contract. The Oklahoma City Barons answered the call, and Winquist has been posting offense in the Oilers organization since. Is it enough to get him an NHL contract?

WINQUIST IN THE AHL

  • 2013-14: 1gp, 0-0-0
  • 2014-15: 46gp, 8-11-19 0.413
  • 2015-16: 35gp, 8-22-30 0.857
  • Total: 82gp, 16-33-49 0.60

That is solid progress, and offensively Winquist scores well compared to Edmonton’s other prospects in Bakersfield. Let’s compare career numbers in the AHL among Condors prospects:

  1. Iiro Pakarinen: 43gp, 18-13-31 0.72
  2. Josh Winquist: 82gp, 16-33-49 0.60
  3. Marco Roy: 42gp, 8-12-20 0.48
  4. Bogdan Yakimov: 93gp, 17-26-43 0.46
  5. Anton Slepyshev: 49gp, 13-8-21 0.43
  6. Tyler Pitlick: 196gp, 28-57-85 0.43
  7. Kyle Platzer: 52gp, 8-12-20 0.38
  8. Jujhar Khaira: 106gp, 14-23-37 0.35
  9. Kale Kessy: 127gp, 12-12-24 0.19
  10. Mitchell Moroz: 106gp, 10-9-19 0.18

In fairness to many of these forwards, not all 10 players will be applying for the same NHL jobs. Jujhar Khaira and Bogdan Yakimov will be applying for Anton Lander’s job, while Anton Slepyshev and Tyler Pitlick are chasing Iiro Pakarinen (and may not catch him).

WILL EDMONTON SIGN WINQUIST?

Winquist has enough skill to play on a scoring line in the AHL, but Edmonton’s recent signings (NHL and AHL) may impact his status:

  2. L Jere Sallinen. 98gp, 16-18-34 0.35 in KHL

  4. R Patrick Russell. 81gp, 30-36-66 0.81 in college

I am still curious to figure out where everybody thinks Lander is going? They still need bench players. I don’t really see the organisation sending him down to the minors and having a kid sit on the bench in his spot, while he gets a million dollars to the play in Bakersfield. I guess they might be able to trade him for another teams bench player.

          • Copper

I think Lander is still on NHL team. 13th forward in the least. Solid on face offs , reliable defensively, has shown that he can add offence (just can’t count on it). Sounds like depth that all teams need. And, under $1M.

            • ubermiguel

Can add offence?!?! Is it opposite day?! Lander got 3 points in 61 games this year. Oesterle scored more than Lander in only 17 games; Pardy scored 3 points in 9 games; and they’re defencemen. Lander is where offence goes to die.

                • ubermiguel

He had one merely ok half a season in the NHL. In his other 155 NHL games he’s produced 11 points. 11 points! How many NHL games do you need to call a player an NHL bust? 200? 250?

                • Explicit

His role on the team isn’t to simply provide offence. He does a lot of things well, sorry you don’t understand that. he’s not a lock to have a long nhl career, but he’s certainly not a bust.

            • Chet.

It’ll be interesting to see his faceoff percentage in this upcoming season once the new rule comes into play. He quite often dropped his knees to help win the faceoff.

          Taylor Hall 10gp 6g 3a 9p

          Connor McDavid 10gp 1g 8a 9p

          Matt Hendricks 8gp 0g 1a 1p

          Patrick Maroon 10gp 1g 2a 3p

          Leon Draisaitl 10gp 1g 3a 4p

          Andrej Sekera 7gp 3g 1a 4p

          Cam Talbot 10gp 7w 1l 167SA 1.25GAA .940SV%

Hall, McDavid, Sekera and Talbot all had a very strong tournament. Maroon, Draisaitl, and Hendricks didn’t do too shabby as well.

          All of this bodes well.

I feel for Hendricks only because I know he puts his heart and soul out there. They had a rough finish to the tourney. Hendy represented USA and the Oilers very well in this tourney. Proud of you WarWagon!

Sorry but Lander is just taking up space that someone else could use. 11 points in 155 games I don’t care how good he is defensively he is still a forward so he is gone and don’t let the door hit you on the butt on the way out.

          • HardBoiledOil 1.0

i hope to hell they find a more decent replacement for Lander. once he’s out the door, we can officially flush the last remaining nugget out of here from the gawd awful 2009 draft disaster !!
