The Edmonton Oilers have re-signed forward Noah Philp to a one-year contract, the club announced Monday morning. Philp will earn $775,000 on the deal.
Philp, 26, appeared in 15 NHL games for the Oilers last year, getting his first true taste of the big league, though he had much more success in the AHL. There, with the Bakersfield Condors, he scored 19 goals and 35 points in 55 games.
Undrafted, the Oilers signed Philp out of the University of Alberta Golden Bears program after the 2021-22 season. He had just completed a three-year career that saw him play 36 games, scoring 20 goals and 38 points in the regular season, and adding another seven goals and 16 points in 10 playoff games.
He joined the Condors, playing his first pro games, getting three under his belt, and spent the entire 2022-23 season there, scoring 19 goals and 37 points in 70 games. Philp would shock the hockey world by announcing he was stepping away from the game for the 2023-24 season, but he returned last year to post higher goals per game, assists per game, and points per game averages than he had in his prior AHL season.
It wasn’t a long stint for Philp in the NHL this season, but he showed well. With him on the ice at five-on-five, the Oilers controlled 55.2 percent of the shot attempt share, 59.6 percent of the scoring chance share, 55.6 percent of the expected goal share all the while outscoring the opposition 5-4. According to HockeyViz, his on-ice impacts were equivalent to those of a high-end fourth-line player.
Philp is expected to get a look as the Oilers’ fourth-line centre next season and, for the first time, will need to be placed on waivers to be sent to the AHL.
According to PuckPedia, Philp will earn a guaranteed $300,000 on the deal, with $775,00 in the NHL and $250,000 in the AHL.
His new deal comes in under what contract projection websites Evolving Hockey and AFP Analytics projected, as the former estimated his cap hit would be $878,400, while the latter projected for $813,750.
