An Edmonton Oilers player has finally dropped the gloves.
After the Colorado Avalanche demolished the Oilers 9-1 on Saturday, Trent Frederic was one of just three Oilers players to speak to the media, noting that no one wants to fight a player with just one goal through 15 games. Well, he found a dance partner on Monday evening.
Just over two minutes into Monday evening’s games, Frederic dropped the mitts with Columbus Blue Jackets tough guy Mathieu Olivier, one of the toughest players in the league. As one could imagine, Frederic didn’t win the fight and had to get repairs. Frederic eventually returned to the ice, playing a minute and 34 seconds in the first period over the course of two shifts.
While Frederic lost the fight decisively, it was a much-needed scrap. Coming into this game, the Oilers were the lone team in the National Hockey League without a fight this season. One area of concern this season has been the lack of physicality, but this was a good start.
Shortly after the fight, Vasily Podkolzin and Leon Draisaitl laid back-to-back massive hits. Later in the period, the Columbus Blue Jackets’ netminder froze the puck, with Curtis Lazar getting involved with Jake Christiansen. Lazar was back in the mix later in the first period, as the returning Mattias Janmark received a few cross checks after a frozen puck in the offensive end. The Oilers got into another scrum late in the first period.
Last season, whenever the Oilers fought, they had a tendency to win the game. Overall, they dropped the gloves 15 times, going 10-3 in games in which they fought. It only took four games for the Oilers to drop the gloves in 2024-25, as Troy Stecher fought Sean Couturier and Corey Perry fought Joel Farabee in a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.
Although the Blue Jackets opened the scoring, the Oilers were able to get back on the board thanks to a late goal in the first period by Jake Walman. Time will tell if there’ll be any more post-circular activities.
