Thursday morning, the Canadians took on Norway in Group B action. Only two Edmonton Oiler players, Evan Bouchard and Darnell Nurse, were in action, as the United States, Germany, and Sweden were all off.

Let’s take a look at what happened in Canada’s victory, as well as set up the schedule ahead.

Canada vs. Norway

Canada has been pretty dominant throughout the tournament, defeating the Swedes 5-3, the Italians 6-0, and the Danes 5-1. Somehow, the Norwegians were their toughest test thus far.

About five minutes into the game, Eskild Bakke Olsen gave Norway a 1-0 lead, then Johannes Johannesen extended the lead to two midway through the first period. It took less than two minutes for Canada to cut that lead in half, as Mark Scheifele scored his first of the tournament. Then with just over two to play, Scheifele scored his second of the game to even it up after 20 minutes.

Norway restored their lead three and a half minutes into the middle frame thanks to a goal by Noah Steen, but Gabriel Vilardi scored midway through the second to tie it at three. Picking up assists on this goal were Scheifele and Bouchard.

It took just 31 seconds into the third period for Canada to get their first lead, as Dylan Cozens beat the Norwegian netminder, with Nurse picking up the helper. But Steen scored his second of the game with 12 to play, then Tinus Luc Koblar scored for Norway with 10 to play.

Thankfully, Canada found a way to tie the game late, as Ryan O’Reilly scored with just under a minute and a half to play. Once again, Bouchard picked up an assist.

Heading to overtime, Canada found the game-winner just 29 seconds in, as Scheifele completed his hat trick for the 6-5 overtime victory. Once again, Bouchard picked up an assist in what was his best game of the tournament so far.

Unsurprisingly, Bouchard led the game in ice time with just under 27 minutes of action. He mustered five shots on goal, was a +2, and picked up three assists. He now has a goal and four points in four games and is a +8 for the tournament.

As for Nurse, his assist in this game now gives him four in the four games that Canada has played. He played a little under 16 minutes, put on a shot on goal, and finished as a -1, bringing his tournament +/- to +1.

Other notes…

In the early game of Group A, Finland defeated Latvia by a score of 7-1, maintaining their perfect tournament. Slovakia beat Denmark, and Switzerland beat Great Britain. Thanks to the Slovak’s victory, they are now tied at the top of the standings with Canada, as both teams have 11 points.

Four Oiler players are in action Friday. Canada takes on Slovenia at 8:20 a.m. MT. At the same time, Josh Samanski’s Germany plays Hungary in Group A action. In Group B’s later game, Sweden will face Italy with a start time of 12:20 p.m. MT. The other game on tap sees Great Britain take on Finland. The Americans are back in action at 4:20 a.m. MT Saturday, facing Latvia.
