We are deep in the weeds this offseason. There has essentially been zero news around the Edmonton Oilers, with only a few interviews popping up from players and management.
However, whenever there’s news regarding an Oilers player, it tends to ruffle some feathers, and that’s what happened when EA Sports NHL announced that Connor McDavid will be rated 99 overall in NHL 27. They announced on Monday, that McDavid is the first member of the “99 Club.”
For the most part, Oilers fans believe this is the right thing to do, that it’s about time. There are others, though, who think this wasn’t the right move by the video game franchise.
“This is utter nonsense. Ray Bourque was a 99 overall in NHL 94. Mario Lemieux was a 100 overall (yes, that was a thing!” – Mike Gould via X
“EA FINALLY MADE MCDAVID A 99!” – TacTixHD via X
“Do these people not know their own game’s history? Ray Bourque and Mario Lemieux were both 99/100 in NHL 94. Sergei Fedorov was a 99/100 in NHL 95.” via X
“No one tell them about all the 99 and 100 overalls in the games in the 90s.”  – Nick Spence via X
“Ok, I think EA should have said we are bringing *BACK* 99 overalls and not treating it as if McDavid is the first guy. Other players have been at 99 and Mario Lemieux was a 100 overall once.” – Avry’s Sports Show via X
“This took them f***ing long enough to do… Should have been a 99 out the gates for years now in the games.” – The_LordX via X
“So, he’s basically unstoppable in the game.” – Carlo Colaiacovo via X
Some of the confusion around the decision to give McDavid a 99 overall rating stems from some believing his 2025-26 was one of his “down” years, which is crazy to say after he produced 138 points last season.
Then you have the purists who have pointed out how he isn’t the first player to earn the illustrious rating, that it was done in the 90s and early 2000s, and that EA Sports has managed to lie to themselves, creating a false narrative that this is the first time they’ve done such a thing.
“There have literally been close to a dozen 99s in EA.” – Shayne Kelly via Facebook
“Jagr was 100 in NHL 2000.” – Brett Patterson via Facebook
“A one way player that lacks defensive capabilities… makes sense. The league caters to him. So now video games do too?” – Tyler Norris via Facebook
“I feel like this is a badly missed marketing opportunity. Should’ve capped everyone including historical players at 98, except for Gretzky the only 99 in the rafters & in the game. Made a big deal about the 99 Club debut. Then McDavid could’ve joined the Great One in the 99 Club.” – The Errant Wolf via X
“Maybe the greatest offensive talent ever to grace the NHL. But no way should he be 99 when his defensive game isn’t elite.” – Toby1Kenobi via X
A lot of other responses are the stereotypical, “How can he be 99 rated without winning the Stanley Cup?” just people looking to take a dig at the Oilers captain whenever they can without taking into account that’s a team accomplishment, and forgetting that Connor McDavid has nearly willed the franchise to back-to-back Stanley Cups.
But to those bringing up the game’s history, it does feel as if EA has totally ignored the games they released 25 years ago. Now, if they said, “We’re bringing back a new rendition from classic NHL titles,” that might’ve smoothed things over with general hockey fans. But even then, if you’ve cruised the comments about NHL 27, the tone from consumers of the video game franchise is far from positive.
For Oilers fans, at least they know that when they get their hands on NHL 27, their team will have the best player in the game.
