A few thoughts on tonight’s Oilers-Flames tilt

The Edmonton Oilers iced a skilled team tonight against the Calgary Flames in Penticton but the inexperience of the forward group cost them for much of the game. The Flames best players pushed for the first 40 minutes, with Dylan Wells and a solid Edmonton defense holding the opposition at bay. In the third period, Edmonton’s skill cashed quickly and put the result to rest. The 60 minutes in Penticton were interesting from a prospects point of view, let’s have a look.
OILERS PENTICTON ROSTER
- G Dylan Wells. Stopped 26 of 28, for my money he was the best player in an Edmonton uniform. The defense showed good structure in front of him but Calgary’s talented forwards (Mangiapane, Jankowski, Foo, Pollock, Dube) were running for long periods and having their way. Wells was money.
- G Stuart Skinner, 18. Did not play.
- LD Caleb Jones. 0-1-1. He played a steady game, impressive mobility. He has calmer feet than a year ago.
- RD Ethan Bear, 0-0-0. Bear was noticeable in three areas: Power play, where he played quarterback and got some nice looks; outlet passing, where he was excellent; defensive coverage, where he got beaten clean a couple of times. Early days.
- LD William Lagesson, 0-0-0. I thought he looked composed, even got a reasonable chance on net off a faceoff. Lagesson can play defense.
- LD Ziyat Paigin, 0-0-0. We didn’t see the big shot from the point but he did show that massive wingspan and he covered well. Quiet with the puck, except one time when he jumped in front of his net with two Flames forward bearing down. Probably just wanted to make sure Gerry Fleming was awake.
- RD Ryan Mantha, 0-2-2. He was involved offensively all night and passed the puck well. Used his size well, too. I thought he lost his mark a couple of times, but his shot was on display early and often. One of several giants on the ice in an Oilers uniform.
- LD Dmitri Samorukov, 0-0-0. He played a solid game, despite some chaos (understandable based on age and experience). He’s mobile, makes good decisions. A promising player.
- LC Joe Gambardella, 0-0-0. Played on the top line, had a brilliant chance in the first period plus a couple after that. He’s a fine forechecker, the Oilers could use someone like him. He is not an elite talent, but we knew that before tonight. I like this kind of two-way center.
- LC Lane Bauer, 0-0-0. Played on a quiet third line, he didn’t get a lot of time with the puck.
- RC Austin Glover. He played some of the bigger late minutes, had a couple of looks. Had the Oilers most questionable hit (cross check).
- C-W Davis Koch, 0-2-2. He was around the play a lot on the Oilers best line, grabbed a couple of assists. Koch works hard and has real skill. I wonder if someone drafts him next summer.
- RC Steve Owre, 0-0-0. Played a depth role.
- LC Brandon Saigeon, 0-0-0. Noticed him on the penalty kill some, he’s a good skater based on tonight’s viewing.
- L Kirill Maksimov, 1-1-2. Crazy game. All skill or nothing. What a shot! Happened right after he got flattened too. What a shot. Lordy.
- L Evan Polei, 1-0-1. I’ve seen him a few times and the goal is kind of what he is as a player: Surprisingly skilled. He is big, strong, can play, the calling card is those soft hands. Speed is the issue. He’s from the Patrick Maroon family of wingers.
- R Kailer Yamamoto. Yamamoto had a shift in the first period that was pure fire. Chipped the puck past the blue, then scooted to daylight. Had all night to make a move, did, stoned. Gambardella trailed, and would have drilled the rebound into the net but got unlucky. Yamamoto had several moments of brilliance during the game but credit to the Flames, they marked him well.
- R Ostap Safin. He was disappointing, but has been in Canada about 12 minutes.
- RC Chad Butcher, 2-1-3. A brilliant game, Butcher could have had two more goals. Really nice hands, he’ll be a going concern in Bakersfield if he keeps this up.
- R Trey Fix-Wolansky, 0-0-0. Got hit by a truck early, picked himself up and kept going. A quiet game overall from him, hope he gets another shot.
Two more to go, the hockey is back!
