Wednesday Night Hockey moving to Prime Video

Another day, another chance for hockey fans and their NHL-consuming habits.

Amazon Prime will now be the home of Wednesday Night Hockey, agreeing to a sublicensing deal within Canada with Rogers Communications for 12 years. Financial terms were not disclosed.

That means 26 regular-season NHL national games in English and French, beginning in the 2026-27 season, will be broadcast on Amazon Prime. The first game will be Sept. 30.

There’s no exact schedule yet, but the Edmonton Oilers play 11 times on Wednesday nights this season.

What are the playoff details in the Amazon-Rogers deal?

There is also a playoff component.

According to a press release, Prime Video has also acquired exclusive rights to select Stanley Cup Playoff series in Canada, comprised of two first-round playoff series and one second-round series per year.

In an article in The Athletic, a Sportsnet spokesperson says Rogers will get first dibs and pick three first-round series and two second-round series. Prime Video can select their preferred series after that.

How does the deal impact Sportsnet and Cable subscribers?

It’s the latest chance in what’s been a busy summer for hockey broadcasting as Rogers’ new $11-billion rights deal with the NHL begins.

They own exclusive English-language rights to more than 500 national NHL games per season, including Monday and Saturday nights, as well as the Stanley Cup, until 2037-38.

This summer, Rogers is no longer sublicensing games on Saturday nights to CBC, thereby ending “Hockey Night in Canada,” and has shuttered two sports talk radio stations in Calgary and Vancouver.

Sportsnet Plus subscribers were notified last week of an upcoming price increase to standard and premium packages.

Prime Video started NHL broadcasting two years ago with its Monday Night Hockey offering. This deal means Monday games will return to Sportsnet.

More details will come later on who the broadcast talent will be for both Rogers and Prime Video.

Play-by-play voice John Forslund had been the most consistent piece the past two seasons for Amazon, with hosts Andi Petrillo or Adnan Virk, and colour commentators Jody Shelley and Thomas Hickey.
