It was upset Saturday for Canada today at the World Championships today as they fell 3-2 to Switzerland, setting themselves up with a date with Team USA for the bronze.
For the first time in four years, Canada will not compete for the gold medal at the World Hockey Championships after being upset by Switzerland in the semi-final. While there were the expected moments of flash, Canada played a little bit loose with the details at both ends of the ice which resulted in timely goals against without being able to counter with any of their own.
Despite firing 47 shots at Swiss goaltender, Leonardo Genoni, Canada was only able to get two pucks past him, including being shut out on their lone power play chance of the game. At the other end, Darcy Kuemper was outplayed by Genomi as he allowed three goals on 17 shots, including two on the power play and the early third-period goal and eventual game-winner on what ended being Switzerland’s only shot of the frame. Because of the goaltender, the Swiss were able to bend without breaking and build themselves a lead.
Despite being badly outshooting the Swiss on the shot clock, Leonardo Genoni’s brilliance and two power play goals against were the difference in this hockey game and the major reasons that Canada won’t be playing for gold. To their credit, Switzerland played a disciplined game and killed off the lone power play they gave up while scoring two of their own and propelling themselves to victory. Against the Russians on Thursday, Canada’s power-play pumped home three goals in a 5-4 quarterfinal win, but they were unable to get anything done in their one chance today
In the end, the special teams losses combined with Leonardo Genomi standing on his head were too much for Canada to handle today and sometimes all you can do is tip your hat. Towards the end of the game, Canada applied all kinds of pressure and piled on the shots but they just weren’t able to find the equalizer and get this thing to overtime. I’ll admit after Parayko scored late in the third, I was expecting them to tie things up and move on to a win that we would all laugh about later but that’s the beauty of sports, isn’t it? Sometimes the goalie steals one and you have to respect that.
Looking ahead, Canada will play for bronze against Patrick Kane and the Americans on Sunday as they will look to keep their medal streak alive. The bronze medal game will mark the fourth year in a row that the Canadians will have a chance to win a medal at the tournament, and a matchup with a rival should hopefully be enough to get the boys fired up. Fingers crossed. Go Canada.
