Canada takes home bronze medal in men’s hockey

It’s not necessarily the result we wanted, but at the end, of the day we have to be proud of the boys for their accomplishment.

For the first time in 50 years, Team Canada has captured a bronze medal in men’s hockey at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. After winning gold medals in the previous two Winter Olympics, the pressure was on this year with a roster made up of non-NHL players.

After months of feuds between the Olympic committee and NHL, it was determined that for the first time since 2002, NHL players were not allowed to compete in the 2018 Winter games. This was obviously a heartbreaker for most hockey fans as I was personally ecstatic at the thought of Connor McDavid playing on a team with Sidney Crosby. Unfortunately, it didn’t go down that way, and we were forced to get over it quickly.

Instead, we watched a group of young athletes from Canada play their hearts out on the Olympic stage, and it was rather great to watch in my opinion. These are guys who never in their lives thought they’d represent team Canada in the Olympics and were thrilled when they got the call. You have to laugh a little bit of how many former Oilers were on the roster though right?

After a disappointing upset to Germany in the semi-finals, a team looking for redemption took on the Czech Republic this morning in the Bronze medal game. After a huge offensive push from Canada in the first two periods, the Czech’s late third-period comeback fell short with a 6-4 final, giving Team Canada their bronze medal. Former Oiler, Derek Roy, contributed to the team’s success, potting a goal as well!

Even though we fell short of our goal, the boys worked their asses off to get there, and I salute them for it. Add a bronze medal to the recording-breaking Olympics Canada is already having!
