Last night, Leon Draisaitl scored his 47th goal of the season in the first period, joining Connor McDavid as the second Oiler to reach the 100 point plateau. It’s the first time that the Oilers have had to 100+ point players on their roster since Jari Kurri and Jimmy Carson accomplished the feat in 1988-89.
With the Oilers chasing down the second Wild Card spot with just over a week left in the NHL season, it would be easy for the fans to dwell on the negatives of what looks like another lost season, but we all need to take a minute to appreciate the ridiculous year that both Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are having as well. We all expected Connor McDavid to hit 100 points again, he’s done it three years in a row now, but I don’t know how many folks would have expected Draisaitl to hit triple digits as well. Not only did the big man set a new career high in goals, assists, and points but he absolutely smashed his previous highs in every category and established himself as a goal scorer along with one of the league’s best passers. Were you surprised to see McDrai hook up for Leon’s 100th point? I wasn’t.
Check out the goal below:
I know this season hasn’t gone the way we all wanted for our boys, though they are still in the mix for the second wild card spot, I wanted to give a shout out to Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid for an incredible accomplishment. With the dynamic duo locked in long term, the Oilers have the pieces to make some noise, but now it’ll be up to the organization to surround them with competent teammates that can support the amazing work they’re already doing.
