The COVID hits keep coming for the Edmonton Oilers as the team announced that Dylan Holloway is the latest to be added to the list of players to be sidelined for the next little while. Happy days, right?
Only three days after joining the Oilers for practice after months of recovery from wrist surgery, Dylan Holloway just can’t catch a break as he is now sidelined by COVID protocols after testing positive on Monday. Holloway was originally injured last March while playing for the University of Wisconsin and underwent surgery to correct the issue last spring, but the problems persisted and he required an additional surgery back in September to fix the problem.
Back before the season started, Cam Lewis had Holloway ranked as Oilersnation’s second-ranked prospect after the 14th overall pick from 2020 tore up the NCAA in his second season with the Badgers.
Likely the biggest bright spot among Edmonton Oilers’ prospects last season was the performance of 2020 first-round pick Dylan Holloway.
When the Oilers selected Holloway with the No. 14 overall pick last fall, there was a little bit of skepticism around the choice as he seemed to profile more as a middle-six, checking forward rather than an offensive dynamo that would usually go in the first half of the first round.
That perspective has largely been erased thanks to the post-draft season Holloway just put together for the Wisconsin Badgers. Holloway finished fifth in scoring among all NCAA players in 2020-21, a major breakout after his Freshman performance the year before.
There was talk that Holloway could push for a spot on the Oilers out of training camp this season, but, unfortunately, that’ll be put on hold as he underwent wrist surgery and will miss at least the first three months of 2021-22. This is obviously an unfortunate blow, but it’s better Holloway misses time and puts the issue behind him because he’s a very important player for the organization moving forward.
In total, the Oilers have placed 19 players in COVID protocol since December 14th: Ryan McLeod, Devin Shore, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Duncan Keith, Jesse Puljujarvi, Darnell Nurse, William Lagesson, Zack Kassian, Warren Foegele, Tyler Benson, and the newly added Holloway.
For the Oilers, the list of guys that haven’t been added to COVID protocol is shrinking by the day: Leon Draisaitl, Zach Hyman, Colton Sceviour, Kyle Turris, Kris Russell, Mike Smith, Mikko Koskinen, and AHL call-ups in Markus Niemalainen, Philip Broberg, Dmitry Samorukov and Stuart Skinner.
