Edmonton Oilers player review and 2021-22 preview: Dominik Kahun

Sail on, Dominik.

After spending just one season with the Edmonton Oilers, Dominik Kahun is looking for a new home.

The one year was short-lived, however. He joined the team and was largely a third-line player for the Oilers and was, well, rather unspectacular. In 48 games, he scored nine goals and 15 points.

His most common linemates last season were Kailer Yamamoto and Leon Draisaitl and while he was a positive goals player with both players (50% and 58.33%, respectively), those weren’t driven by Kahun. His pass-first mentality was a nice compliment to a shooter in Draisaitl, but he struggled for much of the year to create space for himself on the ice.

Thus, it’s not a major surprise to have seen the Oilers walk away from him. Kahun has since inked a multi-year deal with SC Bern of the Swiss League.

Part of me, however, wonders if the Oilers could’ve benefited from bringing him back on a cheap deal. At 26-years-old, he’s still a younger player and only has 186 NHL games under his belt. Yes, Kahun has played for a new team in each of his four seasons, but that’s also difficult for any player — let alone a younger one like Kahun.

There’s probably a reason why he’s bounced around from team to team. I wonder, however, if Kahun is the type of player that just needs some stability.

Nonetheless, Kahun was a replacement-level player for the Edmonton Oilers and the team and now, someone like Dylan Holloway or Raphael Lavoie will get a chance to challenge for a roster spot.
