McDavid becomes first Oiler to score 40 goals since Klima in 1991

We haven’t even played eight minutes of hockey tonight and Connor McDavid has ALREADY earned his 100th point of the season AND his 40th goal of the season. These milestones are special for a variety of reasons. With his 40th goal tonight, Connor McDavid has put himself on a pedestal alongside some other Oiler legends. 

Can you believe that the last time an Oiler scored 40 goals in a season was in 1991? I wasn’t even alive then! The man who did it was, of course, the legendary Petr Klima. Not only did he score 40, but Klima got his 40th with just four minutes left in the season. In a franchise filled with hockey legends, Connor McDavid is solidifying himself as one of the best, and he’s only 21 years old.

After a slight delay in the game due to an injured linesmen, Connor stepped up the pace immediately by stealing the puck in the neutral zone and chipping it off to Nuge. Nugent-Hopkins then sauced it back to Connor who made no mistake putting it in the back of the net. #McNuge strikes again!

The best part about this is that Connor still has five and a half more game to score more! He’s reached 100 points, has a decent lead in the Art Ross race, and now has his eyes set on the Rocket Richard trophy. Alex Ovechkin is currently the scoring leader with 45 goals. If Connor can catch up, it wouldn’t be the first time he’s come from behind in a scoring race to take the lead this season. (cc: Nikita Kucherov)
