According to the Oilers’ Twitter account, the team has returned Josh Currie back to the Bakersfield Condors for the start of their playoff run.
After digging into Josh Currie’s story last summer, it was hard not to cheer for a guy that had to work as hard as he has for every single thing he’s got. The guy has had to scratch and claw his way into every opportunity he’s ever had in hockey and that’s the kind of determination that you have to respect regardless of how his career turns out with the Oilers. When he signed his two-year deal in July of last year, I said that it would probably be a longshot that Currie would ever play games with the Oilers, but, as he’s done at every level, Currie proved us all wrong by getting the call to finish the year with the big club.
The native of Charlottetown, PEI, was recalled from Bakersfield on February 18th and got into his first game against Arizona a day later. With this move, Currie will now finish up his season with the Bakersfield Condors, where he was leading the team in goals at the time of his recall, to help with their first playoff drive in franchise history. Considering the success he had in the AHL before being called up to the big dance, Currie’s goal scoring prowess will be a welcomed addition to a Condors squad that will be looking to make some noise against the San Antonio Rampage.
In 21 games played with the Oilers, Currie registered two goals and three assists for five points while averaging 8:43 minutes, which was a fine NHL debut for a guy that many of us didn’t expect to play at all. The Condors kick off their playoffs on Saturday night, starting at 6 pm MT.
