As you may have heard by now, Oscar Klefbom hurt his hand in last nights game against the Avalanche and will be out for “weeks” says Ken Hitchcock. With Klefbom out, Oilersnation had just under 24 hours to ponder how management would handle the situation and now the answer we’ve been waiting for has just been tweeted out.
That’s right, Ethan Bear recalled. Honestly, I wasn’t really expecting this. I was thinking that the team was going to roll with their current lineup of Nurse, Larsson, Russell, Benning, Gravel, Garrison, and Wideman. I turned out to be very wrong, as Caleb Jones is currently on his way to the team.
Earlier today, Cam Lewis broke down some options of how the Oilers can handle the Klefbom injury. Here’s what he had to say:
In the AHL, Ethan Bear figured to be the first call-up. We all assumed Bear would be on the team as soon as Evan Bouchard was returned to the OHL, but that hasn’t happened yet. There’s also Caleb Jones, a rookie in the AHL who has 12 points through 21 games. I don’t know if adding a rookie to the mix will help much, but Bear would be a nice replacement for Klefbom on the team’s first power play.
Although Ethan Bear would have been my first choice as well strictly based on his NHL experience (not a lot, but more than Jones), Caleb Jones is having a great year with the Condors and is leading the Bakersfield defencemen in points. Jones has had a great start to the season and is obviously being rewarded for his efforts. This call-up doesn’t necessarily mean Jones will see any playing time as they could just use him as an extra for the remainder of Klefbom’s injury. But if he’s with the team he might as well see some sheltered minutes. This could be a good opportunity for the young defenceman to see some NHL ice-time for a limited period of time before returning to light up the AHL.
Here’s what Jay Woodcroft had to say about Jones’ play so far this season:

Klefbom Update

As I’m writing this we have finally heard an update on Oscar Klefbom. As expected, it sounds like he did break some fingers in his hand. Honestly, I expect nothing less after seeing the slapshot he took directly to the glove. Klefbom could be out as long as six weeks which would be awful for the Oilers team. Guys like Kris Russell and Matt Benning are going to see a big increase in time on ice, and we’ll have to rely on some strong play from our third pairing, whoever that may be, as well to get through this injury unscathed.
