The Edmonton Oilers have reportedly kicked tires on Patrick Kane

Ken Holland might be getting in on the Chicago Blackhawks’ blow-up.

According to Frank Seravalli, the Oilers have checked in on Patrick Kane, but the star winger isn’t currently ready to leave Chicago.

Kane is entering the final season of the massive eight-year, $84 million contract that he signed with the Blackhawks back in July of 2014. His cap hit is $10.5 million and it also features a full no-movement clause.

The Blackhawks have leaned into a full-on teardown after a miserable 2021-22 season in which they went 28-42-12. Chicago traded Alex DeBrincat to the Ottawa Senators and Kirby Dach to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for draft picks, indicating that the team has its eyes set on the future.

Now 33 years old, Kane is still an elite winger at the NHL level. He scored 26 goals and 92 points over 78 games for the Blackhawks last season and logged an average of 21:49 per game.

Kane, the No. 1 overall pick from the 2007 NHL Draft, has spent his entire career thus far with the Blackhawks. While his plan at one time might have been to spend his entire career in Chicago, the Blackhawks pivoting to a multi-year rebuild might not be how Kane wants to spend the final few seasons of his career.

Given Kane’s massive $10.5 million cap hit, him moving at the trade deadline makes more sense than during the off-season.
