Today is likely going to be the biggest waiver day in NHL history.
Given how short training camp is this year, many teams hadn’t made many cuts yet and any player that is going to be re-assigned to the AHL or the Taxi Squad needs to hit waivers today.
We’ll be seeing over 100 players on the waiver wire today. Here are the five that the Oilers are waiving, per the team’s official Twitter account…
Two of these players, Alan Quine and Anton Forsberg, are no surprise at all as they were brought in over the off-season to serve as organizational depth. The other three, though, were engaged in legitimate roster battles.
Both Russell and Nygard are depth wingers who offer speed and the former is a quality penalty killer. It’s fairly likely that they’ll both clear and I would expect both players to be assigned to the team’s Taxi Squad.
Then there’s Khaira, who’s the biggest surprise of the group. Khaira was the team’s fourth-line centre last season and into the playoffs and was in the mix with other players like Gaetan Haas and rookie Ryan McLeod for the same gig this year.
Khaira enjoyed what looked like a breakout season in 2017-18, scoring 11 goals in 69 games, but didn’t take a step forward in the years after that. He scored three goals in 2018-19 and six goals in 2019-20.
Khaira carries a $1,200,000 cap number this season and the Oilers will get a slight savings if he’s buried in the AHL or on the Taxi Squad.
