Throwback Thursday: This week in 1992, Edmonton Oilers eliminate Vancouver Canucks from playoffs

This week in 1992, on May 12th, the Edmonton Oilers eliminated the Vancouver Canucks from playoff contention.

With Ted Green behind the bench, the Oilers cruised to a 36-34-10 record as the club finished 3rd in the league’s Smythe Division.

Vincent Damphousse (38-51—89), Joe Murphy (35-47—82) and Craig Simpson (24-37—61) led the way offensively as Bill Ranford ran show in net.

They met the LA Kings in in the first round, who they eliminated six games, before the second round match against the Canucks. Edmonton took game one 4-3 in OT, while Vancouver bounced back in game two with a 4-0 shutout.

But in game three, Edmonton bounced back with a 5-2 win before taking game four 3-2. Vancouver took a 4-3 win in game five, but in game six, Ranford came to play.

He shut the door stopping 26 shots as goals from Craig MacTavish, Damphousse and Esa Tikkanen launched Edmonton to a 3-0 victory. The win gave Edmonton the series win and a visit with the Chicago Blackhawks in the conference finals. There, however, Edmonton was swept in four games as they were eliminated from the playoffs.
