Throwback Thursday: Today in 1985, Edmonton Oilers record playoff record 12th straight victory

I spend quite a bit of time every week trying to find neat things that have happened in Edmonton Oilers history and honestly, nothing seems to beat the 1980’s. There’s just so many incredible things the Oilers did in that decade.

And today, in 1985, the Oilers did another one of those things.

Edmonton were squaring up against the Chicago Blackhawks where the Oilers won 7-3 for their 12th straight playoff victory — a playoff record.

Jari Kurri potted a hat trick as the two clubs combined for three goals in the final 21 seconds of the game, an NHL record.

The win record dated back to the 1983-84 season when the streak began in the cup finals. Edmonton had won the final three games in the 1984 playoffs and kicked off the 1985 playoffs with a three-game sweep of the LA Kings and a four-game sweep of the Winnipeg Jets.

Edmonton took down the Blackhawks in games one and two of their third-round 1985 series, before their streak was broken in game three.

The Oilers went on to win the Stanley Cup that year as Wayne Gretzky scored a rediculous 47 points in 18 games.
