WEEKEND UPDATE!
By Lowetide
6 years agoWe’re back for another year! Weekend Update runs every Sunday night with updates from across the hockey world. We’re not in full go mode yet but there’s enough to update and perhaps a couple of things you didn’t know.
BOGDAN YAKIMOV
The big Russian center is playing regularly in the KHL (7gp, 0-2-2 averaging 15 minutes a night) and is winning faceoffs at a 61 percent clip (171 sorties). Edmonton qualified him this summer, so his NHL future remains under Oilers control.
FILIP BERGLUND
Swedish Poster over at the Lowetide blog has an update on the blueliner. He reports the youngster is playing third pair with Skellefteå in Sweden’s highest league during preseason. He also tells us the club has upgraded their defense, adding former NHLer Mike Kostka to their arsenal. A big year for Berglund, we’ll know more soon (SHL regular season about to get underway).
MIROSLAV SVOBODA
The big goalie is in the big Czech league this season, after posting brilliant save percentage in the hinterlands of his nation. Currently at .907SP in two games for HC Plzen. He is no longer technically Oilers property (club didn’t sign him) but hang it all the guy just made a bigger league over there, so I think we should see how he does.

Last game of the series goes tomorrow afternoon. Chad Butcher and the goalies have gotten a lot of attention, among draft picks Kirill Maksimov has been the most productive offensively. Ryan Mantha’s shot makes a funny sound, kind of like a rocket. Kailer Yamamoto had some 10-bell chances and he is likely to play tomorrow. Tyler Benson has been skating, perhaps that’s the best news of all. Talk next week!
