One of the Edmonton Oilers’ newest players is ready for the chance to dress for his new team.
On Friday, forward Jack Roslovic met with the media for the first time since signing a one-year contract with the team. The 28-year-old acknowledged that he’s been given an opportunity.
“That’s going to be the theme of today, is opportunity,” Roslovic said. “An opportunity to win. An opportunity to play with great players.
“You know, been to the conference finals the last two years, too. These guys obviously went all the way, but the fire is in me, too. I want to win. I know how hard it is. It’s a great opportunity.”
Roslovic was one of the last unrestricted free agents as the new season got underway. He signed for $1.5 million, which was announced in the middle of Edmonton’s season-opening game against the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night.
The Columbus, Ohio native has spent the last couple of seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes, helping the team advance to the Eastern Conference final both seasons. Like the Oilers, Roslovic saw his season end at the expense of the Florida Panthers.
Though he didn’t have the chance to have a full training camp with his new team, he’s ready to take advantage of the chance he’s been given.
“I’m here now. I want to focus on being here, playing well, doing things well I bring from a hockey standpoint,” said Roslovic. “That’s where the focus is now. This summer was the summer and we’re onwards and upwards….It wasn’t fun, but like we said, [general manager] Stan [Bowman] had always had interest.
“So, it’s great to be a place where you’re wanted and a place where they see you fit in a place that you can ultimately succeed.”
He was also questioned about his condition, given that he hadn’t been skating in preseason games.
“I find myself in pretty good condition most training camps. People might think I was sitting around, but I wasn’t sitting around. I was working. It’s been a whole summer process. Everyone around the league does it now. It’s a common thing to do and to be able to be ready for an NHL season.”
Roslovic was asked what he’ll bring to a team that already has offencive stars like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. The former Columbus Blue Jacket pointed out his ability to drive the play using his quick play.
“Speed. Scoring. Try to be kind of a buzz saw out there, make plays. Kind of the thing that everyone already knows me for, and then be able to be a good guy in the locker room. … I think we’re pretty versatile, still had a good face-off performance last year. Figured out that I can play center, but, yeah, playing on the wing is very comfortable for me. Did it for the majority of last year.”
Roslovic is expected to be in the lineup on Saturday when the Oilers play host to the Vancouver Canucks.
