Last week, our friends at DailyFaceoff released their annual Draft Kit, and I’m here to tell you why you should do everything in your power to draft Connor McDavid. If you’re planning on winning your fantasy league this year, Connor is where I’d be trying to hitch my wagon. Anything less would be accepting defeat before the season even starts.

There is no doubt that Connor McDavid is fast approaching the upper echelon of NHL talent, and it’s not unreasonable to think that he could be one of the most prolific producers as well. The Oilers signed hulking forward Milan Lucic to play alongside McDavid this year, and it’s safe to assume that he will be doing everything he can to create space for the sophomore phenom.
While Connor was injured for a good portion of last season, it never really slowed him down when he was playing. If he can stay healthy, this could be a breakout season for the prized centreman. Not only will a healthy Connor be better for the Oilers as a whole, he will also be able to carry his line mates and should boost their points totals. Given the Oilers roster as it stands, there are offensive weapons on other lines that will lead to favourable match ups for McDavid, giving him more opportunities for success on the scoresheet.
For Oilers fans, here’s what you need to think about:
- Connor McDavid is a lock to be the Oilers top centre after scoring 48 points in 45 games, last year.
- Last year, Connor put up points at a clip of 1.07 points/game and that was AFTER being injured for a huge chunk of the year. Can he beat that pace? Possible if not likely.
- Who is going to be better than Connor? I mean, really. Think about it.
WHAT DFO SAYS…

I pulled a couple McDavid quotes from this year’s draft guide:
Sidney Crosby will always be in the conversation as the No.1 overall fantasy pick, but second-year budding superstar Connor McDavid made a case of his own in 2015-16. McDavid is coming off of an injury ruined, but impressive rookie season and figures to be in the Art Ross conversation at the end of the year. John Tavares and Steven Stamkos are both coming off of disappointing seasons, by their standards, but remain near the top of the list of centres. Each of them will likely go later in drafts than they have in years prior. Two of the league’s top playmakers, Claude Giroux and Nicklas Backstrom, are both threats to record 50-plus assists every season and will likely be late-first, early-second round selections.
While I agree that Sidney Crosby is always an option to be picked first for your fantasy draft I don’t see how you’re taking any of Backstrom, Giroux, Tavares, or Stamkos ahead of Connor. While those guys may have more NHL experience than McC, I don’t think that matters considering we’re talking about Connor McDavid and not some secondary prospect. Frankly, if you’re taking Giroux ahead of McDavid I will salute you for losing your draft now.
What else did they say?
Connor McDavid entered the 2015-16 season with tremendously high expectations and he looked every bit as good as advertised. McDavid started the year with 12 points (5G / 7A) in his first 13 games before breaking his collarbone in early-November. Now in his second season, McDavid will look to build off of his 48 points as a rookie. McDavid could realistically challenge for the Art Ross Trophy in his sophomore campaign.
That’s more like it!
TL;DR
Pick Connor with your first pick or do whatever you have to do to make it happen — your fantasy life depends on it.
