Perhaps the hottest coaching candidate in the NHL openly stated on Monday that winning a Stanley Cup in Canada would be cool.
As a Pacific Division rival of the Edmonton Oilers, Bruce Cassidy won a Stanley Cup with the Vegas Golden Knights in 2023 and is viewed as one of the best coaches in the game. With just a few weeks left in the regular season, the Golden Knights stunned the hockey world, firing Cassidy amidst a lagging season with inconsistent results.
That leaves the 60-year-old in Cassidy available for a new gig.
He joined Leafs Morning Take and was asked if he’s ever thought about coaching a Canadian team.
“I represented Canada at the Olympics and Four Nations. It was a great honour. But I haven’t done a deep dive into it,” Cassidy said initially.
“Usually the first thing you think of is the market, does the team have a chance, how does it impact your family, then you worry about the city later. Is ownership solid, things like that. It would be kind of cool to do it. It would be cool to win a Stanley Cup in a Canadian city right now because it’s been awhile. That would be something else.”
Cassidy had one season left in his five-year contract with Vegas, originally signed in June 2022. Reportedly, he was earning $4.5 million a year, but had results immediately in his first season, helping Vegas win the Stanley Cup.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman spoke about a “frayed relationship” between Cassidy and Golden Knights players that stemmed from the playoff series against the Oilers, where Edmonton beat them in five games.
With that one season left in his contract, teams must seek permission from the Golden Knights to speak to Cassidy. Previously, Cassidy was at the helm of the Boston Bruins from 2016-17 to 2021-22, including a loss in the Stanley Cup Final in 2018-19. For a season and a half, he also coached the Washington Capitals from 2002-03 to 2003-04.
