Edmonton’s Professional Hockey Writers Association chapter has voted to select Calvin Pickard as their nominee for the 2025 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.
The trophy is awarded annually to “the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.”

Pickard, 32, is in his second season playing with the Oilers and has been thrust into the starters role for the team in recent weeks. Appearing in 33 games this year, 28 which have been starts, he’s posted a 20-9-1 record, a 2.64 goals against average and a .902 save percentage.
He joined the Oilers organization in 2022-23, playing 38 games for the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors, where his 2023-24 campaign began. By November, Oilers netminder Jack Campbell had hit the skids, and the team sent him to the AHL, calling up Pickard.
It marked the first season in which Pickard played over 10 NHL games in five years, and he was excellent for the team backing up Stuart Skinner, posting a 12-7-1 record, 2.45 goals against average and a .909 save percentage. He was thrust into the first playoff games of his career, too, when Skinner struggled against the Vancouver Canucks in the second round. Getting the start in Games 4 and 5, he went 1-1, posting a ,915 save percentage and 2.21 goals against average.
Pickard entered this season as the backup again, stringing together strong starts for the team. While his numbers may have taken a slight dip, he’s posted quality stars in 71.4 percent of the games he’s gotten the start in. A quality start in the NHL is defined as a game in which a goaltender “achieves at least the mean save percentage (for the season) in a game.”
There’s a chance Pickard could continue to play meaningful games for the team as a starter this year, too, depending on the health of Stuart Skinner leading up to the playoffs.
His chance to continue to vie for that comes Wednesday night, where he’s likely to get the nod as the St. Louis Blues come to Edmonton.
