The Edmonton Oilers will be trying to rebound from a lopsided 5-1 loss to Montreal when they close out their two-game series with the Canadiens on Monday as a -110 wager on the NHL odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Edmonton struggled badly in its efforts to contain Canadiens shooters as the team suffered its first home loss to Montreal in almost four years to fall to 1-2-0 on the season going into Monday night’s matchup at Rogers Place.
Canadiens vs Oilers | OddsShark Matchup Report
After surrendering four goals per game through their first three outings, goaltending concerns loom large in Edmonton. Mikko Koskinen has been on the hook for all 12 goals surrendered by the Oilers this season, and with backup Mike Smith on the shelf with an undisclosed injury, it will be up to the 30-year-old Finn and a struggling Edmonton defense to tighten things up.
The club has surrendered an average of 37 shots on goal through their first three outings, second worst in the NHL, and has squandered reasonably steady starts by allowing an average of two second-period goals per game to date.
Overall, the Oilers have posted just three wins in 11 regular season and playoff contests since early March, and have fallen to defeat in five of their past seven contests in which the total has gone OVER at online betting sites. Consistent secondary scoring has also been a concern, with the club coming up short when the duo of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are effectively contained.
The Oilers sport a meagre 3-8-2 record in their past 13 games when Draisaitl has been held off the scoresheet. But while the reigning scoring champion was blanked by the Canadiens on Saturday night, he has still accumulated 13 total points in his past seven appearances against Montreal, with Edmonton earning the victory in five of those contests.
Also sporting -110 odds for Monday’s matchup, the Canadiens will be looking to maintain the steady pace that has netted them nine total goals over their first two outings of the season.
Montreal’s high-scoring start comes in contrast to last season, which they closed out with an average of just two goals scored per game over their final 13 regular season and playoff contests. Wins in consecutive road games also steadily eluded the Canadiens last season, with the team winning back-to-back away contests just once since December 2019.
