When Edmonton Oilers training camp kicks off in September, the team will be missing two important pieces as Matt Savoie and Frederik Andersen will be absent.

That’s due to injuries suffered during off-season training sessions, the team announced in a statement Wednesday. Both players are actively rehabilitating.

The Oilers are expected to be without Mattias Janmark and Alec Regula in training camp, too, the statement read. Janmark will be out after undergoing shoulder surgery late last season, while Regula underwent surgery shortly after the season finished.

News of the injuries comes as a surprise, as Savoie was expected to be a big piece of the Oilers’ top six this season. Fresh off an impressive end to his rookie season in which he scored nine goals and 19 points in the final 24 regular-season games. He was bumped up the lineup to the top line alongside Connor McDavid, spending 63 per cent of his five-on-five ice-time with him down the stretch run. The two were nothing short of tremendous, outscoring the opposition 13-7 in 203 minutes, controlling 53.4 per cent of the expected goal share and 55.8 per cent of the shot share.

Andersen, meanwhile, was expected to share the load in the crease alongside Tristan Jarry and the newly acquired Devon Levi. The biggest concern around signing Andersen to the one-year, $1-million cap hit but bonus-laden contract was whether or not he would be able to stay healthy. Over the last three years, he’s seperately dealt with blood clots, a knee injury, and a concussion, limiting him to just 73 regular season games over that stretch.

Janmark underwent shoulder surgery last March to deal with a lingering issue dating back to the 2024-25 season. While he played in 43 games last season, he scored just one goal and eight points.

Regula, meanwhile, was injured two games into last season, but went on to play 29 games before late January, when he was sent to the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors, drawing in for 20 games, scoring four goals and 11 points.

It’s unknown what the injuries suffered are, but the team said, “updates on each player’s availability to return to action will be provided when appropriate.”
