Catching a Donair at Game 4 might have been my best moment as an Oilers fan

The Edmonton Oilers do a fantastic job with in-game activations that keep fans engaged when the play is stopped. Whether it’s the t-shirt toss, the cab racing game, or simply throwing people up on the jumbotron, there’s always something to watch for.
But there’s one moment that stands above the rest, one that everyone wants to be a part of, but only a few get the reward — Catching a donair.
I was one of the fortunate few who managed to snag the meaty snack out of the air on Tuesday night when the Oilers hosted the Dallas Stars for Game 4 of the Western Conference Final. Hunter the Lynx marched down the stairs of my section with half a dozen donairs in his arms. That’s when I knew my time had come.
Fortunately for me, not many people around me had noticed the gigantic lynx walking down the stairs. As I rose to my feet, Hunter spotted me and lobbed one into my area. His throw wasn’t directly to me, so I had to reach high and behind. He could’ve thrown it anywhere because I was going to be denied. I managed to get a clean catch and dragged it down.
What a feeling! My friend Matt, whom I went to the game with, was ecstatic. He couldn’t believe it. Baggedmilk and Kennedy were sitting close by, so I showcased my triumph to them. Again, they were incredibly excited about it. It was a funny moment.
How did it taste? Not great. It’s a free donair, so they didn’t pack it up like they typically do. There wasn’t much meat, the vegetables dominated the flavour, and there was maybe a squirt of sweet sauce. All of that is irrelevant because the best part had already happened before I took a bite.
We all love donairs at Oilersnation, so the moment was made when I caught it and saw everyone’s excitement. Credit to the Oilers for coming up with such a distinctly Edmontonian idea. I would recommend more meat, but beggars can’t be choosers. I am just grateful I didn’t have to spend another $20 at the Kiosk instead.
