Connor McDavid has one NHL award already wrapped up, his first regular-season award in three seasons.
With a 48-goal and 138-point campaign under his belt, Edmonton Oilers star McDavid secured his sixth Art Ross Trophy, now only trailing Wayne Gretzky all-time in scoring titles.
But what about the Hart Trophy, which he last won in 2022-23? With Nathan MacKinnon, Nikita Kucherov, Macklin Celebrini, and David Pastrnak all warranting some MVP buzz, McDavid’s case has been building.
This stat might be the most significant in winning the award.
McDavid recorded at least a point in all of the Oilers’ 41 regular-season victories this year.
It’s extremely rare for a player to record a point in every one of his team’s wins. In fact, it’s happened just twice in NHL history for a team that won a minimum of 25 games, and only once for a playoff team.
The two other occasions were Wayne Gretzky (29 wins in 1980-81) and Dennis Maruk of the Washington Capitals (26 wins in 1981-82). Gretzky won the Hart Trophy that season. Maruk finished sixth in Hart votes, despite being on a team that didn’t make the playoffs.
In total, McDavid scored 36 goals and 98 points in the team’s victories.
McDavid also had the greatest influence on his team’s offence this season, factoring in on 48.9 per cent of Oiler goals this season for a league-high. No player got a point in more games than McDavid, either, as he found the scoresheet 68 out of 82 times, or had more multi-point games with 43.
Edmonton went 0-12-2 in those 14 games he failed to get a point.
This was the second-highest goal, assist, and point total in McDavid’s career, and tied Paul Coffey for the 30th most points in a single season in NHL history.
Voters had to turn in their award ballots on Friday, so the dust is settled behind the scenes. It’s just a matter of when the league will announce award finalists, before the official decision goes public in June.
Considering how poor the start of the season was for the Oilers, and the dire lack of depth scoring for the majority of the year, plus missing Leon Draisaitl in the most important stretch run, McDavid is certainly in the mix for the Hart.
But to accomplish something as rare as this warrants serious consideration.
