The latest report says the injuries to two Edmonton Oilers could extend into the regular season.
The team issued a statement Wednesday afternoon saying Matt Savoie and Frederik Andersen are expected to miss training camp after sustaining injuries during off-season training sessions. TSN’s Ryan Rishaug added more context with an injury timeline on Wednesday evening, saying that both “will be available late October or so.”
The injuries were not disclosed, but on Wednesday’s edition of Oilers Now, Bob Stauffer said he believes Savoie’s is lower-body.
“I don’t think in the case of either of them, like last year Hyman missed the first 19 games of the season with that restructured wrist of his, so I’m hoping that we’re not looking at a term length that long,” said Stauffer.
“I believe that one is a lower-body injury and we’ll just have to wait and see here in terms of potential return,” he said.
Stauffer believed the first penalty-killing pair was going to see Savoie play with Jason Dickinson, which could throw a wrinkle in the Oilers’ plans four-on-five, especially as they look to improve the PK, not just tread water.
Andersen was dealing with a knee injury in the Stanley Cup Final, but there’s no word on whether this delay to the start of his season is because of the knee or not.
“I don’t know the severity of the injury, but I don’t believe we’re looking at something that’s going to be and we’ll get some more information, I don’t want to speak out of turn here but I haven’t heard any wind that we’re about months upon months upon months,” said Stauffer on Andersen.
“There was a plan all along to go with three goaltenders. I know Devon Levi has looked very good by the reports that I’ve heard. Tristan Jarry stuck around and has been here a lot in town, and he needs to bounce back. He’d be the first to tell you that.”
Mattias Janmark’s shoulder recovery continues after having surgery in March. He last played on Feb. 25, suiting up for 43 games in 2025-26, scoring one goal and eight points.
Alec Regula has dealt with serious lower-body injuries in his past, missing the entire 2024-25 season. He played 29 games with the Oilers last year and 20 more in the AHL with the Bakersfield Condors. No word on the procedure he underwent this off-season.

Assuming all 4 players are out to start the season & they begin with 22 healthy players on the roster, #LetsGoOilers previously projected starting cap space of $4.75M is down to $1.9M. puckpedia.com/team/edmonton-…

With the need to fill spots on the active roster, the Oilers’ cap space at the moment falls from $4.725 million to $1.928 million, according to PuckPedia. That’s something to be mindful of if they look to add another player into the mix.
