Connor McDavid has won another award. Whether he cares all that much about it, you could probably guess.
The ESPY Awards were on Wednesday night, an event where figures across various sports gather in the dog days of summer to fill sports programming while Major League Baseball is on All-Star Break, and also raise money for charity.
At the event, Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid won Best NHL Player for the fourth time in his career after his 48-goal and 132-point campaign. He beat out competitors like Hart Trophy winner Nikita Kucherov, Avalanche stalwart Nathan MacKinnon, and rising superstar Macklin Celebrini for the honour.
This is the fifth straight year an Oiler has won the award. In 2025, Leon Draisaitl earned the honour.
Since 1993, when the event first began, McDavid has won the Best NHL Player award the second-most times. Pittsburgh Penguins great Sidney Crosby has won it a record number of eight times.
Other NHLers who’ve won the award include Mario Lemieux (3x), Mark Messier, Eric Lindros, Joe Sakic, Dominik Hasek (2x), Chris Pronger, Jarome Iginla (2x), Jean-Sebastien Giguere, Jaromir Jagr, Tim Thomas, Jonathan Quick, Jonathan Toews, Alex Ovechkin (2x), and Patrick Kane.
The ESPYs (Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards) is a catch-all collection of awards that pits athletes from different sports against each other while being broadcast on network TV in the United States.
For example, there are Best Male Athlete and Best Female Athlete categories where basketball players would be finalists against football players. Some of the most notable are the Arthur Ashe Courage Award and the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance.
McDavid won the Ted Lindsay Award for best player as voted by his hockey player peers in 2025-26. He came close to winning the Hart Trophy for MVP, finishing second according to the Professional Hockey Writers Association.
