My friends, Connor McDavid just had the awards night that every Oilers fan knew he deserved. On this evening, our beloved captain took home both the Ted Lindsay Award and Hart Trophy as the league MVP. Anyone question the choice? No, I didn’t think so.
When you think of the most valuable player it’s pretty much impossible not to have Connor McDavid on your mind. Not only was he the only NHLer to hit the 100 point mark this season, he was a human highlight reel on a nightly basis and the driving force behind the Oilers’ first trip back to the playoffs in a decade. Connor was the PB to our J and calling him the MVP almost doesn’t do him justice. He’s more than that. Not only is Connor the best and most valuable player on his team, he also represented the light at the end of the tunnel for a city that spent 10 years watching depressing, soul-sucking hockey.
While the Ted Lindsay Award and Hart Trophy are both individual awards that Connor McDavid rightfully deserved as compliments to the Art Ross he’s already won, I can’t help but feel like all of OilersNation is feeling a certain sense of pride right now. Watching this amazing young player get rewarded with the accolades he rightfully deserves was the cherry on top of a fantastic season and another reminder of how the Hockey Gods were smiling upon us back in April of 2015. Even when he’s just winning trophies, I can’t get tired of watching Connor McDavid.
Amazingly, this was only Connor’s second season (first full year) and he already has the NHL by the balls which is both amazing and unbelievably satisfying. Having him as an Edmonton Oiler pisses off NHL fans in every other market and the saltiness of their tears is so sweet and delicious. That said, having Connor McDavid on our team has been a blessing from the Gords, and I think I can speak for all Oilers fans when I say how thankful we are to have him. Tonight, it was nice to see both the league and his peers recognize him for what we’ve known all along.
Connor McDavid, we speak your name.
THE NHL 18 COVER
As if winning every award he was nominated for wasn’t enough, Connor McDavid will also grace the cover of EA’s NHL ’18 for the coming season. It must be a pretty surreal feeling to be on the cover of a game he’s played his entire life. That’s a cool cap to his evening. The only thing missing for Connor on this night was to walk away from the awards with a 50/50 win.
