One of the Edmonton Oilers’ head coaching candidates during this recent cycle talked about his experience on a recent podcast.
On Leafs Morning Take on Wednesday, they interviewed outgoing Toronto coach Craig Berube, who was an early candidate in Edmonton’s coaching search before they eventually decided to hire Mike Babcock.
He said on The Leafs Nation’s flagship show that although it was a positive experience, the longer the Oilers went without making a decision caused him to pull out of the running.
“It was good. I had a great conversation with Stan Bowman and Jeff Jackson for quite some time and went through the process, and it just got dragged out too long,” said Berube.
“So, I just took myself out of it. They’ve got decisions to make, and they’re going to do what they do. But it was really a good experience for me too. I had never met those guys before. You get to meet new people, and we’ll see down the road if something works out.
“You never know when you’ll run into people again, or they’re managing the same team or a different team. So, it’s always good to meet people, and they get to know you and know what you’re like, and know what your process is and your identity and how you want your team to play.”
Berube was the first public name linked to the job. Los Angeles Kings’ choice Peter Laviolette was also in consideration, and reportedly talked with Oilers’ players during the process, similar to Babcock.
After two seasons in Toronto, Berube was relieved of his duties when Toronto hired new general manager John Chayka. Over the course of his coaching stops in Philadelphia, St. Louis, and Toronto, Berube carries a career record of 365-252-90.
