Another Edmonton Oiler has been activated off of Long-Term Injured Reserve, but this one will be going to the AHL.
On Monday, the Oilers activated Connor Clattenburg and loaned him to the Bakersfield Condors, where he started the season. He last was in the lineup for the Oilers on Dec. 4 against the Seattle Kraken.
The 20-year-old has been dealing with an eye injury that began after being high-sticked in that game.
According to Jason Gregor, the stick caused internal swelling near the eyeball, which required Clattenburg to rest and not risk strenuous exercise to keep potential swelling at bay.
Clattenburg played five games with the Oilers and provided youthful energy and moxie, while also scoring his first NHL goal and accumulating 13 penalty minutes. His fiery play was seen on Nov. 29 at Seattle, where Clattenburg dropped the gloves with Frederick Gaudreau and won the scrap.
He does not have to go through waivers, and the move could be a conditioning stint.
The Oilers’ forward group is thinning out as they get healthier, with Noah Philp claimed off of waivers on Monday by the Carolina Hurricanes, and David Tomášek’s contract sent through waivers to be terminated.
In the latest edition of 32 Thoughts, Elliotte Friedman reported that struggling forward Andrew Mangiapane could be willing to waive his no-trade clause if the right deal could be arranged.
That leaves Jake Walman, and Kasperi Kapanen on LTIR, and Tristan Jarry on the injured reserve.
This is just Clattenburg’s first year of full-time pro hockey, drawing into the Bakersfield Condors lineup once in 2024-25 after finishing his junior career with the Flint Firebirds of the OHL.
He has one goal, one assists, and 59 penalty minutes in 15 AHL games this season.
He was drafted in the 5th round, 160th overall in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft.
The Condors next play on Wednesday against the Coachella Valley Firebirds.
