We missed this yesterday, but the Oilers continued their preseason cuts by sending goaltender, Shane Starrett, to the Bakersfield Condors, which leaves only three goalies left at main camp: Cam Talbot, Mikko Koskinen, and Al Montoya.
With the regular season getting closer by the minute, it’s not overly surprising that the Oilers shed another goaltender from their main camp roster. They don’t have time for funny business with Europe on the horizon. Starrett will now head to Bakersfield for the start of their training camp, leaving Mikko Koskinen and Al Montoya to battle it out for the backup job in Edmonton. Considering the Oilers just paid a premium to sign Koskinen, you’d assume that he’s a shoe-in for the job, but this is the Edmonton Oilers we’re talking about here and it’s not like Koskinen looked all that comfortable in his first preseason action. He’s playing against the Jets tonight so I guess we’ll have to see how that goes.
Can you imagine if Al “The Answer” Montoya steps up and steals that job? Would be kinda hilarious, no? Anyway… The Condors kick off their preseason schedule next Saturday, September 29th against the Stockton Heat.
