Connor McDavid has been named the NHL’s second star of the week, per an NHL release Monday.
The Oilers captain has been in peak playmaking form since returning from injury last week, with nine assists across three games, setting Edmonton back on a three-game win streak as they march closer to the postseason.
It’s the second time this year that McDavid has been named in the NHL’s three stars of the week, previously coming in at number one back in November when he hit his 1000th career point. The Canadian superstar made his grand return to the ice last Wednesday as the Oilers took down the surging St. Louis Blues 4-3. His three-assist night included primary helpers on Connor Brown’s game-opening goal for Edmonton and his eventual late game-winner.
Two nights later, he assisted on all four goals as the Oilers beat the San Jose Sharks 4-2 and clinched a playoff berth. He added two more apples Sunday night as the Oilers beat the President’s Trophy winning Winnipeg Jets 4-1, avoiding the series sweep. He is currently riding a 16-game points streak, broken up by his time out with injury.
With just two games remaining in the Oilers’ regular season, McDavid is now one point away from a fifth consecutive 100-point season. It’s especially impressive considering he has only played 66 games this season, with multiple absences due to injury and suspension. Most recently, the Richmond Hill, Ontario native missed eight games with an undisclosed injury after exiting a March 20th contest against the Jets.
Following his strong week back, head coach Kris Knoblauch announced that McDavid will sit out Monday night’s contest against the Los Angeles Kings out of an abundance of caution for the health of their star forward heading into the playoffs. With a number of key Edmonton players missing time in the past few weeks from injuries, it’s no wonder Knoblauch is looking to play it safe and shore up his roster with their eyes on another deep Cup run. And while they could technically still clinch home ice advantage round one over the Los Angeles Kings, the odds are pretty slim, and it’s likely better to just keep McDavid healthy.
