The Oilers took care of business in their regular-season finale on Thursday, hammering the Canucks 6-1 at Rogers Place to clinch second in the Pacific Division.
Edmonton finished the campaign with a 41-30-11 record and will now host Anaheim in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
It was the exact type of performance the Oilers needed heading into the post-season, taking control early and leaving no doubt in a must-win game.
Josh Samanski opened the scoring for the Oilers two minutes into the first period, and Matthew Savoie extended the home team’s lead to 2-0 a few minutes later. Edmonton native Ty Mueller put Vancouver on the board midway through the frame, but Savoie responded with two more goals before the end of the period, completing his first NHL hat trick.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Colton Dach added insurance markers in the second and third periods, putting the game out of reach for Edmonton. Connor Ingram turned aside 11 of 12 shots in a quiet night behind a dominant performance in front of him.
Evan Bouchard recorded three assists, finishing with a career-high 95 points, the most among all defencemen. Connor McDavid picked up four assists in the win, clinching his sixth Art Ross Trophy with 138 points in 82 games this season.
Edmonton’s captain enters the playoffs at the peak of his powers, carrying both momentum and another scoring title into the postseason.
What they said…
Oilers captain Connor McDavid on being ready for playoff hockey…
“The expectation is the same as always. We’ve got a great belief in here. Playoff hockey is unique. It’s a skill to win in the playoffs, and we feel pretty good about having that skill, having been there and having won a lot of playoff games.“That said, it’s exciting. It’s exciting for everybody, and we have to be ready to roll.”
Oilers forward Matthew Savoie on scoring his first NHL hat trick…
“I feel good, for sure. My confidence has been high over the last few games, and I’ve just continued to put myself in good spots and contribute.“It’s special to do it in a big game where we knew we needed to win to clinch home ice and treated it like a playoff game, so it was definitely special for me.”
Oilers defenceman Darnell Nurse on facing Anaheim in the first round…
“They’re a really good team. They battled at the top of our division all year. Obviously, it’s no easy feat to get into the playoffs in this league, and they’re a skilled group.“It’s going to be a good test right off the jump.”
Canucks forward Brock Boeser on the growth of young players during a difficult season…
“We have so many young guys. Their maturity and learning how to play the right way takes time. I thought they did a much better job toward the end of the year.“Everyone needs to have the right mindset coming to the rink every day. You can’t be satisfied. You’ve got to find ways to be better, work harder, and play as a team.”
Canucks goaltender Kevin Lankinen on the team’s outlook moving forward…
“Of course, it’s disappointing where we are. Looking at the standings, that’s not acceptable.“But I want to believe the future is bright. We’ve got pieces to build on, and I trust the coaching staff and management are making the right decisions. We’re going to be more competitive going forward.”
