‘Time to make the change’: Oilers fans react to Nurse trade talk

Many Edmonton Oilers fans have prayed for times like this: a breaking point in the relationship between Darnell Nurse and the team.
When Mark Spector released his piece on Sportsnet, reporting the two are headed for a breakup, it sparked hope among those who have wanted to see the defenceman traded and for the organization to clear up cap space.
The comments in this article come from X, and comment sections from Sportsnet’s Facebook page, as well as Oilersnation’s Instagram and Facebook.
Now there’s no guarantee that Nurse gets traded this off-season, but fans reacted on social media to the chance that it could happen.
Seems like the Oilers and Darnell Nurse are going to be moving on from one another. I was always a huge fan of Darnell. But, last season changed a lot. – Kgill39 via XI am not against trading Nurse…. I think both the team & the player might benefit from a change. What I worry about who is eating the minutes Nurse plays??? – Trent Wilhauk via XOilers fans. Nurse has absolutely no trade value. Just remember that when you’re making your stupid ass mock drafts. – Leo Seyerpa via XCan’t come soon enough. He’s the main reason why the Edmonton Oilers do not have a Cup. Holland screwed up BIG TIME. – Dougers97 via XWhy would he want to stay on a team that clearly doesn’t want him? – Denny Sawchuk via X
Denny makes a good point. For Nurse, the only reason he would want to stay is the fact that the team has been so close to winning the Stanley Cup in recent years. He also has a good relationship with core players like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, but Stan Bowman, on the other hand, has no loyalty to the defenceman.
Bowman didn’t sign him to the contract; Bowman didn’t draft him, and as the Oilers’ general manager, he will attempt to make whatever moves he can to finally reach the promised land of winning the Stanley Cup.
Rather than score goals on his own goalie, why not park him on the other side of the ice in front of the opposition goalie and have them deflect off of him there? I can see him being a 50-goal scorer in that role. – Bissam Fiyth via FacebookLet’s do a straight exchange, Reilly for Nurse. They both need a change of scenery. Both have two years left on their contracts. – Tulip Theo via FacebookNurse has always been an excellent defenceman when paired with the right partner. He played well beside Murphy this season, he played well beside Stecher in the past. Didn’t work with Emberson, didn’t work with Bouchard. – Dwayne Westad via FacebookI’d keep him, having said that I would turn him into a winger. I have thought for years that he would make a better winger than DMan. Worth a try what have they got to lose. – Shawn Parks via FacebookI guarantee he’ll be a lot better on a different team with a fan base that doesn’t blame him for all the Oilers’ problems. Him getting traded will be the best thing to happen for his career. – Dee Dubb via FacebookNurse is family. Might be time to make the change though. – Alli884 via InstagramIf they trade him, Stan better have a plan to replace / upgrade him. He’s really not that bad of a player and you can’t just plug Stastney into there and both Stastney and Emberson in the lineup. That’s not a true Cup Contending D what so ever. Especially in front of Jarry. – Andrew4h via InstagramBowman needs to be calling Detroit and trying to get Nurse there with a package for Larkin. – Twoodman93 via Instagram
Trading Nurse will be difficult. For the player, it could mean finding a new home after nearly 800 games with the same team. He’s had a lot of stability as part of the Edmonton Oilers and a lot of responsibility on the ice. However, for many, that responsibility hasn’t translated into the success they’d like to see from him, especially for how much he makes every season.
Buckle up, folks, because this is just the start of what could be a busy off-season for the Edmonton Oilers, potentially including cutting ties with a man who’s logged many minutes wearing the Oilers crest.
