Although the Oilers fell short against the Avalanche on Saturday night, Corey Perry made history with an assist.
Despite losing his stick in the process, Perry helped keep the cycle going by getting the puck to winger Mattias Janmark, who was able to set up a nice Sam Carrick goal midway through the third period. It was evident the play was a milestone one since Perry was seen grabbing the puck as not only did he hit the 900-point mark, but this was also Carrick’s first goal as an Oiler.
It has been a tumultuous campaign for Perry, to put it mildly, but he has remained a reliable player throughout. He has recorded nine goals and 17 points in 37 games split between Edmonton and Chicago. Although nowhere close to the player he was during his prime, his veteran presence and on-ice leadership will certainly play a vital role for the Oilers, who have aspirations of a long playoff run this spring.
Originally drafted 28th overall in the 2003 NHL draft by the Ducks, Perry has also suited up for the Stars, Canadiens, and Lightning throughout his 19-year career. The four-time all-star has won many awards through his career, including the Rocket Trophy and Hart Trophy in 2011, a gold medal at the 2010 and 2014 Olympics, gold at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, and the Stanley Cup in 2007 while in Anaheim.
He reached the 900 point mark (426 goals and 474 assists) in 1294 career games played. Additionally, Perry has suited up in 196 playoff games where he has registered 123 points (53 goals and 71 assists) spread across 15 playoff runs.
Perry and the Oilers will look to rebound from the overtime loss when they host the Canadiens on Tuesday night. You can catch the action on Sportsnet West and TSN2 with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m. MDT.
