We’re hours away from the start of free agency, and the Oilersnation editorial staff has been hard at work in recent weeks identifying who could be the Edmonton Oilers’ top targets in free agency.
From the forward ranks, to the blue line and between the pipes, we’ve identified 10 players that could be of interest to the team. Let’s look at each of them, and what they contract projection looks like, thanks to AFP Analytics.

Corey Perry

Who doesn’t love a little reunion? Perry was a good soldier for the Oilers for two years, scoring 27 goals and 43 points in 119 games, adding 11 playoff goals and 17 points in 41 games. He opted to leave the team last summer, signing in Los Angeles before being traded to Tampa Bay. Would the 41-year-old want to run it back?
Projected contract: One year, $2.173 million cap hit.

Ilya Mikheyev

There seems to be some smoke around the 31-year-old Russian winger and the Edmonton Oilers. He’s a speedy player and a strong penalty killer, who has decent goal-per-game and point-per-game numbers. He could be a Kasperi Kapanen replacement, but anything more than his projected deal would be too rich for my blood. Oh yeah, he also played his first season in the NHL with Mike Babcock.
Projection: Three years, $3.456 million cap hit.

Patrik Laine

If the Oilers want to get funky with a depth player, Laine could be the fit. He’s eligible for a performance bonus-laden contract, sinking his cap hit. Couple that with the fact he’s looking to prove himself after a few rough years, and the 28-year-old could make sense. He was once one of the more pure scorers in the league, and lord knows Edmonton needs some depth offence.
Projection: One year, $850,000 cap hit.

Sergei Bobrovsky

Bobrovsky seems to be off the case for the Florida Panthers after they acquired Jacob Markstrom from the New Jersey Devils earlier this week. Oilers fans know him all-too-well, and after a downseason for himself and the Cats last year, he’ll be looking to prove he still has gas in the tank. The Oilers likely need to move Nurse before this one could happen from a cap perspective, but I’m intrigued.
Projection: Two years, $5.595 million cap hit.

Jamie Oleksiak

If the Oilers want to beef up the blue line in the wake of a Darnell Nurse trade — whenever that happens — could I interest you in a smooth-skating, 6-foot-7 Jamie Oleksiak? He’s been linked to the Oilers in the past, and could be a solid fit on the third pairing.
Projection: Two years, $2.958 million cap hit.

Mason Marchment

Bygones be bygones. Marchment would be a great fit for the Oilers. He’s pesty, can score, and is a big body, too. His offence dipped during his 29-game stint with the Seattle Kraken, but he racked up 15 goals and 32 points in 39 games playing in Columbus’ top six last season. I’m very intrigued.
Projection: Three years, $5.670 million cap hit.

Anthony Mantha

Mantha is interesting but might be too rich for the Oilers’ blood. He had a rebound season, scoring 33 goals and 64 points last year with the Pittsburgh Penguins, and has been a consistent depth scorer in most of his five stops in the NHL.
Projection: Four years, $6.354 million cap hit.

Matias Maccelli

After not being issued a qualifying offer by the Maple Leafs, Maccelli is destined for free agency. The 25-year-old is looking for a new home, and that could be in Edmonton. He’s averaged half-a-point per game in his career, and Lane Golden outlined why he would be a fit with the Oilers.
Projection: Two years, $3.192 million cap hit.

Scott Laughton

The Oilers signed Jason Dickinson, and that likely takes them out of the running for Laughton, solely from a fit perspective. If he took less money and less term to sign in Edmonton, I could see him as a depth piece, but he’ll likely have other suitors.
Projection: Three years, $4.108 million cap hit.

Vladimir Tarasenko

Tarasenko’s got two Cup rings and a long track record of producing in depth positions. He could slide up and down the lineup, and put up a respectable 23 goals and 47 points in 47 games last year in Minnesota.
Projection: One year, $3.390 million cap hit.
