The revolving door of banged-up players continued for the Edmonton Oilers.
While Kasperi Kapanen returned from injury to score a goal and an assist in the Oilers’ 6-2 win over the Nashville Predators, Adam Henrique left the game in the first period after reportedly blocking a shot.
The block in question came just over five minutes into the game when he stopped a Filip Forsberg shot from reaching the Oilers’ net.
After the game, Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch said Henrique is expected to miss some time.
“No official status, but I think he’ll be out for a little while,” said Knoblauch.
Henrique has appeared in 43 games for the Oilers this season, scoring two goals and 10 points, averaging 14 minutes and six seconds in ice-time. He started the game on the third line alongside Jack Roslovic and Isaac Howard, but after leaving the game, Roslovic slid into the middle of the ice with Howard and Matt Savoie.
Knoblauch said he liked what he saw from that line, and that the three would likely stay together and “see what they can build.”
The Oilers have been in a tight spot with their salary cap in recent weeks, that will come to ahead when Jake Walman is set to return from the Long-Term Injured Reserve, which is expected as soon as early next week. If Henrique is expected to miss an extended period of time, the Oilers could place him on the LTIR, and activate Walman while still being under the salary cap.
And when Tristan Jarry is ready to be activated from LTIR if Henrique remains on LTIR himself, the team can send down one of Calvin Pickard or Connor Ingram, and be cap compliant. This could help the team buy some time as they try and find a new home for Andrew Mangiapane.
The Oilers schedule continues Thursday when they pay visit to the Winnipeg Jets, before hosting the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night.
