It appears that rumours surrounding Samuel Jonsson’s return to Sweden were a false alarm.

Last week, news spread online that the Edmonton Oilers‘ goalie prospect was headed back to his home country to play next season after spending 2025-26 with the ECHL’s Fort Wayne Komets. That would have been a surprising and, frankly, concerning development after the 22-year-old had shown well in his first season in North America. But according to Oilers commentator Bob Stauffer, there’s nothing to worry about.

“Regarding reports involving Edmonton Oilers goaltending prospect Samuel Jonsson, all indicators are that he will be attending [Edmonton’s] rookie camp in September,” Stauffer wrote. “Further to that, he is expected to play in North America this season.”

The initial rumours surfaced on a Komets fan account on X, @khroniclesks, which wrote, “With a rumor of Sam Jonsson playing in Sweden next year, Eemil Vinni may be his replacement at the ECHL level.”

That post came in response to the Oilers’ announcement that they had signed Finnish goalie prospect Eemil Vinni to an AHL deal, setting the stage for his move to North America. The organization already had Jonsson, along with Matt Tomkins, Connor Ungar, and Nathaniel Day, in their minor-league system, leaving fans to wonder where each goalie would slot in among the logjam.

While the post came from an unverified source, concern grew when the reports were discussed on a recent episode of Oilers Now by Oilers prospect analyst Bruce Curlock and 880 CHED’s Ayden Ganam.

Stauffer’s report seems to have put out the fire, which is excellent news for Oilers fans, as a departure from North America may have signalled a rift between Jonsson and the organization. Instead, Edmonton’s 2022 fifth-round pick appears poised to return to Fort Wayne or even earn a chance to play in the AHL with the Bakersfield Condors.

It will be fascinating to see how things develop with five goalies battling for starts on Edmonton’s two minor league affiliates. The Oilers had five goalies in their pipeline last season, too, after trading for Connor Ingram, who started the campaign in Bakersfield. That move forced the Komets to loan Ungar to other ECHL clubs to keep him active. Unless there’s a trade involving one of these goaltenders on the horizon, we may be headed for a repeat of that scenario.

It may not be ideal to have a crowded crease in the minor leagues, where more reps are important for each goalie’s development, but it’s preferable to Jonsson packing up and going home. He’ll now look to build on a fantastic rookie season in the ECHL, where he went 21-8-2 with a .910 save percentage.
